Losi front axle question.

What's the difference between A-1005 and A-1012? Is it that the A-1012 uses a set screw to secure the king pin? I want to do the "big axle" conversion on an RC10...a'la Kinwald.

If I remember correctly, the jrx2 came with the solid version and the jrx pro had the version with the set screw. According to the description of A-1012, they were used on the LXT and the pro SE. I personally have interchanged these parts (prior to the XX), so I'm sure that the only difference is the set screw.

The diameter of the losi axle is slightly larger than the associated (part that slides into the steering block) and is shorter than the associated. If you're using the Associated block, the losi axle will be short, so the wheel bearing will be against the plastic steering block.

If you use the stock jrx2 steering block and axle on the rc10, it should fit fine. If you use the RPM steering block, you'll need to modify the associated castor block.

Thanks for that! 8)
Cedric's build pics show that he cut back the steering block. I'm sure reaming the block to size won't be a problem.

You can also put a 1/16 inch spacer (brass tube) so that the bearing doesn't hit the plastic.

Highway racer covered just about all I know about the axles.

one question though, what is the advantage of having the set screw variety over the solid axles? AE uses the screw on the newer style axles too, is it merely as a backup to the e-clips on the king pin for retention?

In actuality, the set screw was a bad idea with respect to binding.

Myself and and a few others experienced binding when the set screw was applied. Our track (JORROCC) used the same type of dirt used on a baseball field. This stuff was extremely fine and made its way into the hinge pins. When the set screw was applied, it forced the rotation point to be between the hinge pin and the castor block vs. allowing the rotation point to be the point of least friction (which was the hinge pin and the steering block after the dirt got into the castor block).

I used a little bit of loctite on the set screw and tightened it down right before it made contact to the hinge pin.

This was my experience based on the conditions that I raced in. If your track isn't very dusty, then you shouldn't experience this issue.
