Looks can be deceiving. The X-6 is much more than a Tekin look-a-like. I own both the X-6 and a Tekin RC10T conversion.
For its era, the Tekin setup is/was pretty awesome. The Watts Link rear suspension is just plain killer. A lot of linkage action to get the job done, but really cool to see on an R/C car.
The X-6 is a race bred machine like its sibling the 4wd X-5. Both designed to optimize and offer a different twist on proven world and national championship designs. The X-Factory designs offer lots of tuning and truly are race bred rigs.
The X-5 was the 2005 ROAR National Champion at the hands of Greg Hodapp. The X-5 uses the Losi XX4 world champion suspension with the drivetrain simplicity and efficiency of the Losi XXX4 coupled with the X-Factory's unique balanced chassis.
The X-6 (an RC10B4 mid motor conversion) has only been released for approx. 6 months. Since its release, the X-Factory has signed on additional Team drivers such as Brian 'The Dirtinator' Kinwald and Frank Root here in the US and Ellis Stafford in the UK
Yes, the mid motor concept is nothing new. However, the X Factory's X-6 is bringing the concept back in full force with a fully backed R&D race team. I welcome smaller manufacturers such as X Factory to offer racing upgrades/alternatives to the mainstream OEM designs. They are doing nothing different than Tekin, A&L, Andy's, RPM, MIP, Hot Trick, etc did back in the glory days of the original RC10. Come on aftermarket, bring it on! (I'm gonna need something new to collect in 20 years)
I like the ideas and implementation of the car, but it rubbed me the wrong way when Chazz and the gang seemed to take credit for this concept. It wasn't a new idea, and regardless of current tire technology, it wasn't something they did first—new math or not.
I'd love to run one if there was outdoor off road electric racing in this area, but there is nothing to speak of. I had intentions of building an X5 this time last year, but the costs to build one the way I wanted got too far out of my hands, and I kept my XX4worlds to race
I agree, much of the initial press made it sound like X Factory pioneered the mid motor design, but as we all know they did not. However, what they did do is question the all too common rear motor setup in 2wd off road. In doing so they also came up with a balanced mid motor design using a unique battery and electronics layout. In addition they added several ways to adjust and tune the rear suspension and drivetrain for varying race conditions (the front suspension is all AE B4). No design is perfect and the X-6 has its share of shortcomings and compromises. Regardless, I really love the X-6 and what X Factory stands for.
Thanks for the warm welcome - now I need to get my digital camera out and start posting about vintage RC10 stuff.
My only problem with the entire desing of this car and the X-5 is that the battery configurations are similar to nothing else in racing, and force you to have specific packs for each car. It's an impractical option for anyone who races more than that one car.
Other than that, it appears to me to be two great expanded ideas on existing designs.
