"RETRO R/C's" rebuilt MID racer. ** "LOTSA PICS" **
Hi Guys,
I have been feverishly trying to prepare some classic cars for next weekends large vintage race meeting here in Australia.
Last year I ran three brand new un-run cars - the Marui Samurai, the AYK Viper and the Kyosho Lazer ZX-R.
This year I am going to be running some nicely restored cars. The first one that I have gotten ready (well - almost - just need to tidy up the wiring and a few other odds and ends), is the SWB Kyosho Optima Mid.
This car was a bit of a clunker - as you may note from the "before" photo's. I completely stripped her down, rebuilt using ball diffs. Also added Gold shocks and a repro body from Marwan. I decided to get a bit funky and add a brand new Trintiy "Butterfly" chassis and A&L steering set up. Also did a few mods to the drive train that I used to do back in the old days. This car runs super free now.
I did a really quick paint job on her - mainly because the original body was toast - and Marwans repro bodies are well priced, I can pick up another one and do a much better job for the shelf later on.
I will let the pics do the rest of the talking - I hope you like her - Handles pretty well on the "test track". (road out the front of the house with slicks on!!)
Let me know if you like her!
I have a couple of surprise runners that I am finishing off for this meeting - I reckon I might raise a few eyebrows with one. (Hint - its a 4wd conversion car!!)
Cheers
Darryn

I likey, how mad does it look in profile being SWB with those 2.2s they look massive , looks a bit like a 1:18 buggy
Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.

That's exactly what I was thinking...the proportions are almost cartonish!! It looks great. I like the Lazer front and rear shock towers and Medium shocks up front.

LOL - yes - the modern wheels and tires do make it look a bit over the top.....I still have some originals, funnily enough - last year the old school tires worked way better than the modern ones....
ASSO: I cant imagine that the other car mentioned will be a match for an Optima of any kind - however it will be cool to see one running!
Cheers

If you want to take it a little further:
You can use the lazer arms without any modification on your mid, just need the correct c-carriers and rear hubs. This will add much to the stabilty.
Add the ultima RB5 CVD's with crosspin clamp hexes and you got yourself a perfect racer for short traks

Well, I think it looks a little funny with the big tires. The wheelbase is way too short for the 2.2s. But, I'm so happy to see a "clunker" brought back to it's former glory.

The outer diameter of the tires (including the spike height) didn't actually change when the rim size went from 2.0 to 2.2 you know.
The tire just became lower profile.

I thought about putting the arms on it - I really did - however I wanted to keep it as "mid" as possible. The towers just give me a few more tuning options!
The car doesnt look too bad in the flesh - and as has been mentioned - there is only a few mm difference between the original tires and these ones - the fact that they are disc wheels makes it look worse than it is......you would not really notice it on a LWB!
Also getting a Wild one ready - this one was going to be my shelfer - but what the hell - looks to good not to run it.
Will add some pics of the others as they are finished - the other 4wd has been tested and is awaiting paint.
Cheers

That's what I was thinking. Everyone has to remember the first couple in the Mid series all were on the SWB chassis. This is next for Darryn........RETRO R/C wrote:......you would not really notice it on a LWB!

Hey darryn, I think what adds to the effect is the smaller stand-off of the modern wheels (especially in the rear)RETRO R/C wrote:yeah yeah - laugh it up guys!!

With the ultima RB cvd's you can gain 2mm on each side, and if you find the right hexes to clamp over the pins you can add 2 more mm on each side.

Darryn, I'm about to start an Optima Mid runner build in the near future, can you elaborate on the drive train mods you did?RETRO R/C wrote:Hi Guys,
Also did a few mods to the drive train that I used to do back in the old days. This car runs super free now.
