In 1986 Tamiya pointed a shrink ray at the radio-controlled car world when they debuted their 1/24 2wd electric on-road Tamtech Porsche 962C. Reaching back to their roots of designing model car kits that were suitable for radio control Tamiya's Tamtech line would combine cars from their 1/24 static model range with leading edge microelectronics to create a new line of radio controlled kits. Underpinned by a molded ABS plastic two-piece clamshell chassis the 962 would use a damperless coilover kingpin front suspension with ballcup tie rod and draglink steering system. The downsized electronics would sit midship ahead of a transverse mounted battery while out back the 180 sized motor would direct drive its solid axle through a bevel gear differential attached to one another by a pair of metal motor plates and united with the chassis by an undampened coil spring and lower a-arm/upper twin link suspension system with anti-sway bar. Single piece plastic wheels with Aero Disk covers wrapped in foam tires put the power down and the whole machine was capped off by a highly detailed molded plastic Porche 962C racing body. Sold as an unassembled kit the Tamtech line would grow to include ten cars (1986 Porsche 962C, 1986 Lancia LC2, 1987 BMW GTP, 1987 Ford Mustang Probe GTP, 1987 Ferrari Testarossa, 1987 Porsche 961, 1988 Lamborghini Countach 5000, 1992 Ferrari 634, 1992 Lotus Type 102B, & 1992 McLaren MP4/6) that were available in two different versions, either as a car only, or a complete kit with all electronics, radio gear, and batteries:
