In 1996 Kyosho began releasing a new line of 1/10 2wd on-road cars they called their Mantis Series. Available in both gas and electric versions the Mantis vehicles were built on a three-piece injection molded plastic chassis. The forward section supported a damperless torsion sprung independent front suspension with lower a-arms and fixed camber links. A molded in upper brace crossed over the direct steering system with adjustable tie rods and connected to the transverse battery mounts. Aft of the battery the rear chassis section contained the mid mounted motor and laydown style transmission with bevel gear differential that rotated a pair of metal dogbone axles past the damperless torsion sprung lower a-arm and fixed camber link rear suspension to rubber slick tires wrapped around a variety of vehicle specific wheels. Electric models would come with a Mabuchi 540 motor and rotary mechanical speed controller while gas powered models would receive a flip top gas tank, aluminum rear chassis plate and centrally mounted GX-12 motor with pinion and spur primary drive. All models came 90% assembled, with bushings, less radio in one of thirteen different styles including a 1962 MGB, 1967 Corvette, Shelby Cobra, Volvo 850, Volvo S40, BMW 320, Audi A4, Renault Laguna, 1997 Corvette, Mini Cooper, Fiat 500, Renault Maxi Megane, and Peugeot 306 Maxi, the last four being front wheel drive versions of the Mantis chassis:
