What Are The Dual Sports Of The Dual Sport?

So the best I interpret the DS, is that it was AE's touring car prior to the TC3, which took its place in 1999. They had pan cars for pristine race surfaces, and buggies and trucks for true off road, and the DS came in to fill the void of parking lot racing, and/or smooth/flat dirt track racing. With a little taller set up, the DS seems like it could be a nice oval car.
So, are those the dual sports

Parking lot racer and oval car?
Or was dual sport just a way of saying, "hey, you can take our offroad buggy and make it a touring car." Therefore creating a true dual sport vehicle.
Just bouncing ideas. I have touring cars for touring car things. I have unfinished rally car and oval car projects, so don't really have a complete one of those, and I am thinking the DS made be a great donor, especially for a rally car.

I always though the dual sports were based on the 1:1 cars the bodies were molded after.

I don't have the real answer for you. I always thought it was a play on the All Sport sponsored Mustang.
I know it was originally made for use in unprepped/rougher parking lots where Pan cars just wouldn't work.
Regardless, I feel the chassis could be used for a lot of things like 2wd rally and oval maybe even dirt oval.
Also, ever wonder where the TC1 and TC2 were, because I do?

Dual Sport motorcycles were dirt bikes with street use approved off-road tires and street DOT lights. Not great at dirt or street but still a lot of fun.
The DS seems like a pavement and dirt car, but probably hard packed dirt. Maybe not the absolute best at either but a lot of fun on both.
