In 1978 Associated entered the 1/12th scale electric market with the release of the aptly named RC12E. Associated's first electric powered RC car, the 12E was developed over the year prior to its release. Heavily based off the RC300 the 12E was unique in being constructed almost entirely out of molded plastic. The largest non-plastic component was the hourglass shaped fiberglass plate chassis which utilized its radio tray to minimize chassis deflection while allowing adjustments in torsional movement. The front end consisted of nylon arms and one-piece nylon steering blocks with steel axles and kingpins. Steering was via wire tie rods and a centrally mounted servo saver (the latter of which would become ubiquitous throughout the Associated line). No method of suspension or steering adjustment was available. The rear pod was constructed of nylon blocks supporting the steel rear axle, aluminum hub, nylon spur gear and steel motor plate. The 12E included nylon wheels with foam tires, bushings front and rear and an ABS front bumper. Multiple versions were available from unassembled chassis less electronics and body, to full kits with electronics and a body, and even ready to run versions with painted bodies and radio systems:
