Reedy DS Racing Motor ?

I picked up this Reedy DS Racing Motor recently. The guide only lists DS Spec and DS Modifieds, but this one is a tabbed stock can with bushings. It's stamped ROAR 96.

I can't find much information on the web, and was hoping someone here might have some background on it.

I did find this Reedy 1998 catalog at OldRC that indicates the DS Racing motors are budget modified with adjustable timing and bearings, so the one I have is related but different.

Thanks in advance

I’ve seen a few and have a couple but never with the red top or purple heat sinks they’re usually silver along with bearings.

I'll take a wild guess that it's been Frankenstein'd with bushings, and an endbell from a different motor. The armature could be from something else as well, and they just used the DS can.

You can see the dimple in the tab, where it was re-pressed.

The purple heatsinks look like the ones on my GM motors.

Could be part Firehawk.

Yes -- that's what I expect the modified would normally look like.
I assumed the purple heat sinks were aftermarket.

Nice work juicedcoupe spotting that almost invisible detail!! :D

I took a closer look and there's definitely a mark on the tabs so it seems possible the endbell was replaced -- but the marks look really clean (a nice flat line) like I would imagine a factory assembly would produce using a jig. Do individuals use jigs to break open and reassemble motors??? If it's a Frankenstein it was done very cleanly as there's no damage in the area from opening it up or reassembly and I'd be impressed -- see better pics below.

I also looked at another stock motor I have (Reedy Rage 24) that I'm pretty confident has not been altered and see a similar mark at the top of the one tab not covered by the label. I noticed similar marks on a couple other stock motors I have lying around -- I never noticed those marks before.

I'm not concerned either way as I like the color scheme with label and end bell :), but it's very interesting detective work nonetheless!

Good call!!

I found closeup pictures in an auction listing and the Firehawk endbell appears to be pretty much same color and exactly same design. Also the steel can is the same color and the front and sides have same pattern of vent holes and markings. It looks like it could be the Firehawk motor with a "DS Racing" label -- perhaps they made that combination as a transition.

I think I can see the same marks on the tab in the Firehawk photo also
