I have a Storm 2000. The rears use 9/16 hex. The fronts hold the bearings.

I am told I can use Menace wheels for the rear, but need to find matching fronts.

I know Schumacher still sells the rear buggy wheels, so if I can find Cougar 2000 fronts, I may just go that route. I am thinking of using a 1/10 car body mounted as low as possible. I never liked the racing trucks with the chassis low and the body high.

My questions are:

Do any other cars use 9/16 hex? Or is there a 12mm hex that fits the Cougar/Storm 2000 axles? Is it practical to have a machine shop remove 1 mm or so from the 9/16 hex?

The front wheel bearings are U1411 4x8x3 non-flanged. I think that means the axles are 4mm. Are there any other kits using 4 mm axle?

I know I am asking a lot and this is a fairly obscure vehicle. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

The irony is that I had a ridiculous number of wheels for my CAT and Cougar bitd and gave them all away with the cars.

There are 14mm hex wheels available but the fronts will be hex as well.

What size is the axle itself? There are 12mm hexes available for most of the common size axles.


Look for bearings with a 4mm inner race. Different size outer races will open your wheel options.

Also look at wheels that use a 5/16 od bearing. They can be swapped with 8mm od bearings.

Tamiya truck wheels tend to use long front axles while Kyosho and Traxxas (2wd nitro and early) use shorter axles.

Any truck front wheel that fits Tamiya will generally fit a Storm 2000. Whilst the axle is 4mm on the Storm, and (usually) 5mm on the Tamiyas, the bearings are usually 840 / 850, meaning that the 8mm outer diameter is all you need to match.

Your biggest problem is probably going to be finding front and rear wheels that match.... as there is only limited styles of Schumacher 14mm hex wheels.

I actually never really knew of the 9/16" hex. SOOO, when I was more able and had the ambition several years back I bought a basket case of schumacher carcassese off a member of this board. I used traxxas rear 12 mm hex wheels to finish up the rears since I had the fronts I didn't need to do anything there. It explains the fitment anyway but I figured since the hexes were painted that was what the problem was. I just took a file and hit the hex to remove the paint down to the alloy...plus some so they wouldn't stick in the wheels when changed out. Wasn't perfect but they never failed until the rest of the buggy did. Can't help with the fronts but have boxes of crap that I don't know what it belongs to that I've accumulated over the years. You got pictures of what storm wheels look like?

I said "in the shed", not "out the back, under the pines"..... and I also said "what", not "who"...

I looked in the shed.... soooo many rabbits.... but U2 were (as always) wrong - I found what I was looking for The wheels with rubberware are, from memory, from a Schumacher Wildcat truck. Sadly, they're glued on,and fairly worn, so would need a dose of acetone vapour.

The third pair are new chrome rears, I think from a Rascal or similar...

The fourth pair are a well used pair of white rears, painted silver.

as others have mentioned, for the fronts, the simplest thing to do is get bearings with a 4mm inner and probably 10mm outer, look for front truck rims that use bearings and find out what size bearings they take so you know the outer diameter to get. you'd want rims with a bit of offset, maybe something like this https://www.amainhobbies.com/traxxas-2.2-lite-front-wheels-2-white-tra1974/p10934

on the rear, i think its the friction hexes that are on the storm 2000. you can use the kyosho friction hexes from the old optimas and spiders, i think something like this should work, but do your own checking https://www.ebay.com/itm/303281860557 or https://pargu1.com/product/kyosho-optima-ultima-optima-mid-stinger-maxxum-lazer-ot-19-drive-washe/184/category/47/display/1/ but i know the ones from the spider worked and they were wider than the optima once, they allow the use of 12mm rims, i did it on my cougar 2000 and it worked perfectly

There were 2 styles (maybe more) and I think both were available in yellow or white.

Also, he may offer some options on some parts that aren't available through Ebay.

Schumacher had a set of Cougar 2000 wheels and a pair of Menace rear wheels in stock, so I have those coming. I have no idea what direction this project will go, so keeping my options open. It could end up as a buggy, a truck, a carpet racer with a VTA body, maybe even a rally car.

The Menace rear wheels actually look similar to the wheels on the ProLine Pinto package art car. I doubt if it would fit a truck chassis, but I will be measuring anyway. Given my painting skills, I would do a replica of my own instead of the Bob Glidden version.

Then again... that would be two colours..... possibly a bit above my painting skills

The matt black part would be the tough one, unless you did it on the exterior.
