Curious Bud's motor

I received this Bud's motor a while back with a car. Seeing the bent tabs on the can, I just assumed that it was a common stock motor.

While screwing around, I grabbed it and put it in my Fantom timing jig. I was surprised to see that it only had ~10° (Maybe 12) of timing.

So I checked the other end. No Roar stamp, just "Yokomo Japan" and "M-1".

I'm not familiar with all the kinds of spec classes that were run back in the day. Maybe a 21T, 12°.

Anybody have an idea?

With that vintage of motor build in a Yokomo can and endbell, having a crimped silver 'stock motor' can with less that 27T would have been extremely weird. It would have had all sorts of labels about being an outlaw stock. I didn't see many Buds motors around, but maybe it was a milder timing for more durability. Some of my Yokomo style stock cans without ROAR stamp have an SP stamp. Some have nothing stamped.

Is it an onroad flavor of motor? I really have no clue. I just thought Bud's stuff was more onroad oriented.

No clue.

It came on a highly modified six gear car. It was probably a nice car in its day.

Could it be a default slave motor for the dyno they sold?

I wonder if it is similar to the Reedy Esprit (ES) motors. I have a few of them.

Several of them were mild modifieds with bushings and fixed timing.

I never dealt with them. But it would seem like you'd want the slave motor to have no timing, since it is running backwards.

But as I said, I don't know.

Maybe another member has one.

Doesn't exactly ID the motor but according to the '91 RCCA Buyers Guide Bud's offered at least one mod motor with a fixed end bell. "Modified Stock No 7215 is a super-hot 17-turn single fixed end bell bushing motor."

Oddly enough, there is a pretty much identical Reedy Esprit.
