besides the sport tuned motor, does anyone have an upgraded motor recommendation? just looking to do some backyard usage with the hornet but want some more speed.

What esc?

I use a 13-15 turn old school brushed modified motor (any make) is just about perfect power for the car. Fast enough for me.

I did the following modification and feel that it has changed the performance dramatically: locking the differential.

I locked my differential (you can look it up on google), and love how it runs both offroad and onroad. Keeps the power on the ground, and the car is so light that somehow it works. More traction offroad, and sliding action on road make for lots of fun.

There are shapeway options or just put putty in there...you will experience a whole new car.

As for the esc, I try to keep the hornet with vintage electronics, so a novak t-4 , novak 410 or tekin 310.
As for the brushed motor, thanks for the recommendation for the number of turns. Which pinion gear would you go to with that?

Unless you are running on fairly smooth surfaces, a 13-15T motor sounds like a lot for a hopper. It'd be like trying to drive a pinball.

Reedy has the 19T Radon 2 that sounds about right. It can often be found for under $20. It has bearings, adjustable timing, and replaceable brushes.

The 15 and 17T versions are a little more.

With stock Tamiya drivetrain, I would think a nice 19-21t Reedy Radon 2 would be about right. No reason to push it any further. I am sticking those motors in all my stock'ish brushed builds. I think they are the best bang for buck out there.

The drivetrain should take that kind of abuse from a low turn motor, the rest of the car may not like it as much
