Spare parts build

Post by juicedcoupe »

Even though this is technically a buggy, I'm doing a truck conversion with it.

The plan is to build as much of it from my parts/junk boxes as possible. Of what you see here, the transmission ($40 parts trans)and rear control arms are the only things purchased specifically for it. There are some new pieces here but none of them were bought for this, they are either leftover from other builds/experiments or stuff that I bought in bulk.

I could have build a complete buggy from parts but that sounded boring (I already have seven).

The chassis was from one of my ebay truck rebuilds. In addition to the holes, it was bent and covered in glue and other gunk. The hacked up nose plate was from a parts lot that i bought about 10 years ago.

That huge front bumper will be cut down, after I get the wheels and tires.

The transmission was a $40 gamble and it was exactly what you'd expect. It needed several pieces from the parts bin to be functional.

The shocks are Tamiya CVA's, mostly. They are pieced together from Tamiya, Traxxas, Associated, and Losi parts. I have some so-so bottom loaders but these are smoother and allow more suspension travel.

Since this will have big tires and a six gear, I decided to put a Kyosho Mega 360 (550) in it. Combined with a 87T spur and the smallest pinion that'll fit, it should be decent enough.

Now, I've just got to get the rest of the conversion parts. I'll probably use an Andy's front body mount and rear wheel adapters and either JG or CRP front axles. I'm thinking that Monster Beetle wheels and Traxxas Sledgehammer tires should fill it out. And JConcepts has an 80's Ford Ranger body that has the right look.

I decided to throw some electronics in it and wire the motor up. With some older electronics and the battery, the holes in the chassis are much less noticeable.

Catching up on this. While it doesn't look much different, many of the parts got swapped around to different cars.

It now has a much less modified chassis and nose plate, setup in long wheelbase. New nose tubes as well.

The front suspension got some nearly new arms (no play) and a sway bar.

The rear suspension got replaced as well. I needed the white parts for a different car, so these Worlds arms went on with the associated black parts.

That front body mount isn't staying. It's a Traxxas mount that was laying around but I don't like the fit.

Got a little more done on this one.

Got a JG 3-in-1, body mount/bumper/skid plate. Even though it is for the SRT truck, I think it looks better than the other options.

As intended, I went with Monster Beetle wheels and Traxxas Sledgehammer (1870) tires.

I got CRP front axles, which came with the wrong hardware. I used nylon nuts instead. I probably should have bought JG or Andy's axles but I was already making a CRP order.

Also got the JConcepts Ranger body mostly trimmed. I have some Custom Works body posts on the way, as these are just for mock up.

Love the build and amazing what is lying around in your ‘parts bin’ like how big is that bin?

Is it me or is this one starting to look almost too good to drive?
I come for the RC10's but stay for the Yokomo's :P

Obviously, the last few items were bought new. And it's more like a bin and several boxes.

It'll just be some decent paint (I hope) and pretty wheels over an other plain truck.

Got a little done on this one. The black and silver parts are done, just waiting for the gold paint to arrive.

Then it'll be time to decide which grill and tailgate to use.

Got some gold paint on. It's definitely got a 80's vibe.

Lookin' good! At first I thought this was gonna be a straight 10T build but it's more of an old school conversion! I fondly remember the truck conversion "wars" from bitd. I snapped up an Eagle right when they came out. Looking back on it now, all it really was was a factory packaged Bullet truck conversion with a graphite chassis. Essentially. The wheel offsets were crazy!
Hope you're doin' something fun.
