Stealth question

Post by Jschoenb »

I finally got my brushless system installed on my 10t. However, I noticed that there is a lot of "play" when the spur spins to when the gears actually engage. Is this normal? I'm afraid the brushless system is going to chew up my tranny or ruin my nonendless supply of spurs. Any suggestions?

its probably "wear" on your outdrives where the dogbones meet. even and brand new outdrives there will be SLIGHT play, as they wear, there will be significant play. if they look new... then i have no clue. maybe you have a stripped gear internally?

I kinda thought it was my outdrives as well since it is original. I was just a little concerned since my other 10t isn't nearly as bad.
Thanks

if you look at them closely and notice wear, they probably need to be replaced. heavily used ones will have a "D" cutout in them from the dogbones braking and going. towerhobbies.com still sells em so they arent a hard to find part, just a couple bucks. even minor wear will give like a 10-15degree latency in drive engagement

Sounds like the slipper might need tightening.

A brushless might be too much for the 10T. What motor are you running? Mild? Wild? Id also look at your gear mesh. the pinion should barely be able to "rock" back and forth in the spur gear teeth. You should be able to smoothly pass a small piece of paper between the teeth as well.

Have you tried the same thing w/ a standard ESC and motor? what are the results?

could be a worn idler gear as well as the other things mentioned. you could also have just a little bit of slop everywhere that compounds itself.

i run an older novak super sport brushless on a stealth buggy and a novak 6.5 brushless in another that has the rpm 10t trans. not much time on the 6.5 but the 5800 hasnt lunched the stealth after many many uses. the 6.5 does work the stock slipper pretty hard... but you can updgrade to the b4 dual slipper setup and topshaft pretty easy on a stock stealth.

Yup, the REAL drawback of the good old Stealth is the slipper thingy that is not captured inside the spur gear, with a hot motor, it always ends up "balooning" with centrifugal force... try to use a milder motor OR, like Hoopty said, mount a B4 top shaft and slipper unit... and as soon as the tranny begins to whine, it will be time to replace the intermediary gear, a Stealth should not make any noise when properly assembled and used  oh, and DON'T lube the gears inside, just a fly fart inside the diff (to quote Doug's funny expression)

Or could use a B3 slipper it won't have that problem since the disc is captured.
I hate B4 slippers, such a pain in the arse changing spur gears trying to get it together without the discs falling out of the spur gear rather than just having to do 2 screws.

Wow thanks for all the replies. To answer a couple of questions, I am running a traxxas velineon system which I think is around a 10 turn or so. MOmo, I did have an old Novak 410-m5? esc and i think there was still some "play" in the tranny. I kinda think badhoopty has the right idea of slop everywhere in my system. So how hard is it to upgrade to a B4 slipper? Still only doing minor chassis stuff on my rc's. Oh and also how can you tell that your tranny needs some work?
Thanks again

Yeah the out drives are specific to the RC10/10T 2.25:1 stealth.

Tried running my T2 with a Trinity N60 motor today, on dirt and the slipper couldn't handle it even after the spring fully compressed! Probably need a B4 one to handle that much power..
