Alex kindly loaned me two of these to look at. I've always found them somewhat interesting as the set up is unusual and reminds me of early converted plane engines. The other engine he sent has a taller head with more fins and a slightly different muffler can.

He likes the other engine but I like this one, so we'll tear it apart and see what we can do with it


From a quick initial inspection;


The good - it turns over

The bad - it likely needs a new piston/sleeve




On a slightly different note I don’t know if this is an early prototype truck or not but I'd love to replicate this.... which is hard for me to say as it's not an AE.

I always liked the way these Schumacher cars looked with the engines payed down like that

Let me know if you'd like me to send you another one or two to investigate.... in case you can mix-and-match some bits. Using a new piston and liner is also an option (I think I still have one spare), but I'd probably suggest it go on to a second gen motor....

Looks to be fairly early, maybe pre-production.... fuel tank and silver head are the giveaways. Sure I have a mk1 chassis you could play with

The clutch and flywheel set up is a bit backwards and strange but it looks like it works well. I wonder if bent cranks were ever a problem with these.


Which leads to another oddity, the crank itself. It doesn't appear like it could be used in anything else

I guess the whole parts/mix/match thing depends on your intended goal.... Do you want it to be a good running engine or just a nice display piece in one of your cars? I can't imagine heads getting too damaged on these since they are pretty well protected, so I assume most will appear to be in good shape.

Lots of differences to the 15R I just stuck in one of my cars.

Traxxas used those long cranks back in the nitro hawk days.

I was right about the piston/liner, this shouldn't happen

Take another one from the lucky dip pile.... maybe you'll have better luck lol....

The sleeve above looks to be quite well made, the exhaust port is chamfered and the intake port also has some work done to it too.

Here's the crank for you curious types, it also appears to be well made.


Interesting how the backplate is the engine mount and basically just an aluminum part pressed into a steel plate.



The bearings are quite notchy and the con rod is a little sloppy on the crank pin.


We'll crack into the second engine and see what it's like.

That's quite the stash Alex, impressive The Daytona is awesome, why havent you restored it yet ??

They appear to be in various states of completeness, I see now that swapping some parts would make a couple good engines out of them.

That's what she.... no, already done that once this year. Besides, you don't want a sloppy conrod when you're pinning your crank....

Sure we could find some spares here... I found another engine too.... had one hiding out in the box with the rest of the Nitro 4x4 parts

Some good stuff there although you've included non engine parts...

I hope the conrod in your picture isn’t the correct one for the early .15R. I thought the conrod in the engine I pulled apart looked very much like an OS
