WOIN 4wd RC10 — 2021 VONATS Entry

The 2020 VONATS were a blast, and after a 9 year racing hiatus, I did ok in both of my classes.

I decided to add a 3rd class, and the main inspiration behind it was the Ten4 buggy.

My version is going to be based on the “Old Is New” style buggy, using the Klein Arms, and 10T shock towers and shocks.

Why not a full blown Ten4?? I already had, on hand, a GT tranny👍

Here’s the starting point:

Had to find a long enough shaft that would protrude out of the transmission to be able to mount a pulley onto it.

These are 1.2” long, 4-40 threaded standoffs with an outer dimeter of 3/16”, PERFECT RIGHT?? Nope? They are actually a bit larger than 3/16, had to ground them down a bit to fit in the bearings

The pulley is a Sakura drift car 13t center pulley, and the inner diameter is 4mm, so I had to grind down the outer portion of the shaft to fit in the pulley, drilled through the shaft using the set screw hole as a guide, and fastened it on the shaft using an m2 screw and nut.

What trans are you gonna run out back? A 2.25 and 2.60 aren't going to place nice together.

A 2.25

I have several different size pulleys, one way included, coming in the mail, so I can play with ratios😁

If all else fails, I can always buy a xx4 or xxx4 to run at the VONATS😭😭😭

I cut down the front tower and tried a couple of mounting options for the tranny....

I can mount it onto the Nose plate, and onto the shock tower.

This way would give me nice steering clearance👍

This way, all 4 mounting points would be on the nose plate, and I could brace it to the tower also, and theoretically, gives me good clearance....👍

Bought a one way pulley for an SC10 4x4, just to have that option, it’s a 19t pulley from hot racing.... had to make a new input shaft(idler gear shaft) to fit the larger diameter of the one way.

So this will be the final resting place for the GT gearbox, everything from here on out will have to work around this.

It’s tied to the nose plate using a par of Traxxas servo mounts that will either be replaced for something a bit stronger or just dyed black😁

I made a carbon brace to tie the top of the gear case to the shock tower.

Without the nose tubes, it all fill pretty stiff👍

For those not following the build on the RC10Talk Facebook page, here’s a. It of an update:

After struggling to find the right sized front cvds, I’m still struggling with that 😁, so I’ve decided to extend the arms out a bit, to accommodated the 176mm cvd...waiting on parts🤷🏻

Decided to move onto solving the belt issues, finding the proper size belt was an issue, so I ordered an HPI RS4 MT Tough Racing Belt....when I got it, it was short by a couple of millimeters, so I decided to move the noseplate back to the buggy wheelbase, and use smaller pulleys.

A belt tensioner in the front, and the belt drive system is “complete”.

Need to eliminate some of the rear end chassis flex, so next step is to make some sort of brace👍

Cool project!

And just a question about cars like these. Is belt slap ever a concern? Where the belt cogs hit each other and cause wheel lockup or just momentary loss of power?
