Hello Folks,

I wanted to get some information about my RC10 before I mess anything up. What I mean by that is I bought a RC10 off Ebay because I miss the RC10 I had as a teenager. So I know I have an A stamp. But the color is like a really crappy anodizing job. So before I make a mistake and drill holes in a tub that is worth restoring vs. drilling it to make a daily driver? I was looking into modern electronics, so I bought a stealth tranny off ebay. I could use some help determining what pinion gear I need to match my transmission. I have the bug, I have been buying parts and tires off Ebay and Amazon, so with a little luck and some good guidance I should be able to get a good daily driver.

fyi, some info on the gear. It is a black gear with the number 84 on it, it is the only lettering I can see on it.

Not sure without pics what your chassis looks like but I also have a chassis that is not a well anodized.
It is not as smooth as all my other A stamps and a lighter color. It may be rarer but less attractive and less desirable?
Probably more important to its restoration value is condition i.e. scratches, scrapes and being bent.
As for the gear ratio it has more to do with your motor choice than anything else.

Most likely a 48pitch 84 tooth gear however.

If the bottom is pristine, I would probably not drill into that chassis. But otherwise if it is used and scratched, it is certainly is a good idea to neatly drill stealth holes for it.

The chassis' really hold value only when new and pristine of any stamping. Otherwise it's just an rc10 chassis.

If you are even a little concerned, there are lots of hammered chassis on eBay you can get cheap and not feel bad about running.

if you download the re release worlds car manual from team associated, it has a really nice chart in the back for gearing suggestions depending on which motor wind you are planning to run. if brushed or brushless. it's a great starting point.

That pan just looks a little oxidized, like it was kept somewhere like a garage.

Dissembling and thoroughly cleaning the chassis should help. A good scrub with dish soap and a mildly abrasive pad will usually remove a lot of it.

I have also used naphtha (lighter fluid) to remove some stubborn stains and residue. It also removes servo tape.

If all else fails, there are restoring cleaners specifically for anodized aluminum. It is commonly used on window frames.

Anodizing is oxidation on a large scale. I have seen those pans with a dark rough finish, it's really how the chassis was prior to the anodizing bath, whether it was the parent material, or after the wash in one of the prep tanks.

I agree cleaning it with dish detergent and water and then acetone or some thing like prep wash will get it the cleanest without damage

I anyone able to confirm the size of the gear and the pinion gear I need to purchase so I don't strip the gears out in my transmission.

The correct gearing will be determined by your choice of motor, type of usage, and run time. So...

I regularly use spur gears between 78 and 87 tooth on RC10 transmissions. Anything larger may interfere with some (RPM) gear covers. Anything smaller could require a large pinion to obtain good gear mesh, possibly resulting in a gear ratio that is too high.

Not all spur gears are interchangeable. Kimbrough and Associated (made by Kimbrough) are the most common available currently that have the correct holes for mounting.

Why not find one of these? Or buy a cheap destroyed chassis to use as a template.

If you want to use the RPM 70081 gear cover, you are limited to maximum 81 tooth spur with the 6 gear gearbox and a maximum 87 tooth spur with the Stealth gearbox.

I believe GoMachV might have drill templates for the stealth.
