Triumph Project

Post by mcdze »

i almost tossed this one i didnt even know what it was, it started as 2 examples in a box of beat up parking lot bashers i picked up of mostly hpi stuff, thought it was probably recent hpi basher material .. but turns out its a kyosho .. between the 2 beat up cars and some trays of parts there was almost enough there to build a decent roller without too much capital invested and its coming along nicely .. .got the shocks, diff, and rods set up ..

Score! I love the Triumph. Every trend of 1991 packed into one buggy. It's an awesome classic.

yeah it amazes me i never saw one of these at the track back in the 90's, or maybe i did and didnt know it .. seems like it could have been a serious contender in just about anything i ever raced in which was mostly 'gearbox' type classes on, oval, and offroad ... maybe its fragile, maybe it just wasnt well known .. who knows ..

up to step 9 in the manual - pretty simple tranny other than sorting through parts and screws to find the right ones in fair shape .. interesting is a 'dual belt' drive and the topshaft/slipper assembly is removable with one e-clip .. i can imagine racing in the day wondering about relying on one e-clip to hold my world together lol

up to step 18, slow going sorting through boxes and trays of parts ... finding the correct hardware is the biggest nightmare, the front end is more or less done, added an unseen touch with two 2x6x2.5 flanged bearings in the steering crosslink, she's smoothy ..

basic chassis is done, i deviated from the manual at around step22 it was wanting to install the motor and gear cover, i wasnt ready yet lol .. still waiting on front rims from australia and a repro gear cover from france, and of all things the antenna holder was mia so ordered that ... so in the mean time i'll clean up some old 'drawer dwelling' electrics i have for it ... which is cooler for this you think, a 'handout' stock kyosho motor or a reedy mvp ?

decided to paint the body today and get that out of the way, two things made it a headache i really wanted to put off, and thats 'no window masks' with the repro body so they have to be made up, and this particular body was a challenge to fit the chassis, took some work and several hours (not kidding) .. but its done .. waiting to dry to finish up the wing, we'll give it a couple days before handling ..

got my front wheels in finally, so put um on and finished the body .. she's the proverbial 'roller' now .. it has the feel of a real rear-end eater at this point, i would have loved to have this back in the day  .. onward to the electrics, a couple more stickers, and its done ...

the project is now DONE as far as its going for now, there may be 'upgrades' to better parts in the future .. but electronics are in and its functional .. the model isnt set up though as a far as tires glued, loctite used, diff and slipper adjusted none of that .. but its 'ready to go' and begin the hash out process as a new build as it were ... motor used is a no-name 19T with a kyosho label on it .. works for me for 15 bucks  and looks tight ... also got a repro gear cover in from 'penguin body shells' as a nice finishing touch ...
