What is the best/proper way to dye nylon parts with Rit fabric dye? These are translucent McAllister parts, not the opaque Associated stuff.

RIT changed the formula some time ago, the stuff to use is the synthetic Dyemore liquid. Apparently it works like the old stuff.

the dyemore is your only hope imo. The delrin type materials might take considerable time.

I was told the iDye poly works well, so I used it on some shapeways parts without boiling ( didn't want to dirty a pot for them) and with just boiled water added to the dye then covered for about 15 minutes it took "ok". I am sure with a rolling boil it would've taken a lot better. I was just being lazy. On the bright side, our mashed potatoes were not black afterwards LOL

But I heard the Black RIT dye was still the same formula. Any idea?

GomachV had a nice picture on FB i think that showed results using the new stuff on hard to dye parts.

anyone with experience with the NEW vs. OLD formula of RIT dyes (or other dyes for that matter) for aluminum anodizing coloring?

I use some of the RPM instructions that came with their vintage parts.

I mix the RIT liquid dye in 2 liters of water and suspend the parts with wire in the solution,

I do this while it is still cool.

Do not let the parts touch the bottom of the saucepan.

Put on a low heat and wait, when it starts to just simmer,

put the lid on the saucepan, and set your timer for 20 minutes.

After 20 minutes, turn off the heat and leave the parts in the solution until they cool down,

RC10th/RJ suggested to do this, and I found it works.

His theory was heating the parts opens the pores and leaving the parts in the solution until they cool

down and the pores close, they absorb more dye.

I usually just leave it overnight to cool.

Remove parts and rinse thoroughly.

Jobs done!

The problem is the "new" RIT dye. It's not the same old formula. The Dyemore is more like the old stuff, it dyed some towers that wouldn't take standard rit at all. The bellcranks also took it just fine. Even my new G10 material took it, and I've never been able to dye the new stuff

I guess this is the stuff -- Rit Dyemore Advanced Liquid Dye for Synthetics, but I only find it in 'graphite'. Maybe there's no true black anymore.

Yep that's the stuff. It was called graphite, sounds fancier than just black

Probably lightweight, huh?
