My Suzuki Samurai is a death trap

Post by badhoopty »

yesterday on the way to work there was slush everywhere. on the interstate going downtown, i switched lanes going maybe 40. there was a 10" or so wide ridge of slush between all the lanes, maybe an inch or so high.

so, i'm slowly mergin into the other lane when WHAM the zuk hits that little bit of slush and decides to make an instant 45 degree turn into the lane. i was expecting some pull, but this was uncontrollable.

eventually i had to switch lanes back, and being fully aware and prepared for what was going to happen i still couldnt control it enough to feel at all safe, and i was going about 30 the second time. freaking SCAREY.

a little suzuki samurai with big'ish tires does not like to be driven in such conditions.

i'm starting to wonder if i should flip this thing and just get a tj...

heh, i so didnt realize the pun there.

i also poked a hole in the rocker about the size of a 50 cent piece today...

remember that scene from poltergeist where that film crew dude is eating the chicken and eventually picks away his face in the mirror? it reminded me of that.

its kinda neat though, like picking a scab to see how gross it is underneath.

Death? No, but that scab sounds interesting ...

That's why the Sami was removed from the market, because it was too narrow and easily flipped during emergency maneuvers. Yours being lifted with a soft gushy suspension doesn't help much either. I like your first idea of flipping it for a TJ, though selling it and letting someone else flip it would be safer ...

Who are you again?

:P

Dude, I love my '99 XJ. Bought it last fall with the intent for just grabbing a winter vehicle, and it is definitely staying around long term. As soon as spring comes, I'm going to do a 3.5" Rubicon Express lift with OME shocks, slip-yoke eliminator and some 31" x 10.5" BFGs, along with some other items (maybe a roof rack). As soon as I replace the damn tape deck in the dash with something from this century.

Those little Sams are cool, but for screwing around on weekends. I donno if I could drive that thing every day. I can't imagine putting one of those things on it's roof on the d-Ryan. Commutes shouldn't be white-knuckled experiences.

Dude if you want a rock crawler with a narrow base but still stable go find a CJ-5. There are still beaters out there in good condition. If you don't want that short of a wheel base then go with the CJ-7. I wheeled and crawled in a CJ 7 for 3years, Then I went for the 73 Blazer and had a blast with it. Didn't do well in tight areas but it sure had the balls to get up the hills.
