I decided to expand this thread to include a few more cheap motors and what I got out of them.




Looking for new motors to test and toy around with, I recently ordered a honk kong special, off ebay, to try out.
Specs are:

1x High Speed 540 Brushed Motor 9T 10000Rpm
Suitable for 1:10 RC Car ,Boat and Plane...

Motor Size :
Dimensions : Ø36mm x L58mm
Shaft Diameter : 3.17 mm
Length of Shaft : 13mm

Motor Specifications :
- Operating : 6 ~ 9.6V
- Current No Load : 1A
- RPM No Load : 10000
- Weight : 172gram

If anyone has any input , feel free. I'll post up my results when I get it.

I'm thinking 2S LIPO in my RC10T.

10,000 rpm doesn't sound right,but let us know how you get on mate..

Yeah, sounds really low. I figured I would see what it does.

Should be more like 100,000, at least for the brushless ones.

That's a brushed, industrial-grade class 05, me thinks...

kinda like a johnson/mabuchi silver can, probably designed to live even longer and run even slower...

With all due respect, I think you just wasted $10 or so...

That is probably the case, it'll be interesting to find out. If it's too much of a dog, I'll just see how long it lasts on 12V.

Yeah they probably forgot the 0 on the end of the 9 giving a 90 turn...

So the hong kong special came in. It looks fairly normal other than the green circuit board on the outside of the can.


The test mule is a 10T, gearing is 81s/20p, power is 2S lipo.

It runs good. Fast, not really. Fun, oh yeah! its got power for donuts and spinning tires in the dirt plenty, but no wheelying or blazing top end. It seems some where between my 15T motors and the 20power AE motor in my T3, takes off pretty quick, hits top end before 50-60 feet; A wild guess would be somewhere between 20 and 30 mph.

I don't know what is in it, but for the price, my little HPI 15T and dynamite 15T are better choices.

And at that price, I'll still be running my 550 motors on 3S.

By the way, that transmission brace is upside down.

So, the 3S was charged up above 12V and I set off.

This was the least power gain I have seen in any motor on 3S lipo. Usually there is a crazy jump in power with five more volts. Not this time. The motor smelled as if it had extra juice, it just didn't run like it.

So, mediocre performance on 7.4v and not even a cool story on 3S.

Thanks, that transmission has been in and out so much, it got swapped around last time and I haven't bothered with it.

Well I did say I was looking for cheap motors to play around with, and in an earlier pic there are a few of the candidates that I have picked up. I figured I would post the results here, because while brushed is old tech, the motors and esc are new.

I used this little 1060ezrun esc in my cadillac buggy when I took the msc out. I promptly toasted the 27T AE stock motor on 3S lipo and began toying with other combos.

Currently, this 10T has been running an HPI GT550 motor on 3S lipo, 81/20 gearing. That "little" 550 motor has taken pack after pack of 11+Volt power without a problem. I have read it is a 20T motor but have not confirmed that.

I first tried this combo in my earlier 10T:

Then it transferred to this 10T when I built it as a basher.


This setup is smooth and quick, with gobs of usable torque. It doesn't have a high top end, but it can power wheelie across a field without issue or the fear that is has so much power it will flip over backwards at speed.
It reminds me of a scale Baja race truck under power. The rear squats and the front tires dance until you get some speed under it and it just settles in and flys. Its a really enjoyable combo, especially for under $40 for the esc and motor.

HPI Firebolt 15T

I ran this 540 motor in my rc10 after I toasted the stock motor. It certainly picked up the speed and it also stripped the idler gears in the 6gear.




It was since replaced and it moved to a 10T. This one sells for about a buck a turn/winding, so it's a bargain. It also has a nice cooling fan to help with heat. I've had these little motors in three different 10T's now.
It's a great little motor, not a torque monster, but it has great power and more speed than I expected.
I would really like to see what kind of mph this one puts down, because that seems to be where it shines.
