Whats your thoughts about sniping on ebay?

Post by Dogbone »

Just curious, I had someone tell me they are "not a fan of sniping" after losing an auction to sniping.
I used to think it was the stupidest thing in the world, until I used it, and won.

sniping is the only way to go.
it seems to keep prices somewhat lower by not allowing a back and forth bidding war.

It's also very useful when you know you"re not going to be in front of the screen when the auction ends... I don't see why it would be stupid to use it

For those who are not a fan of sniping and have a problem with someone bidding at the last minute you have still been outbid by someone who has put a higher bid on. Sniping if you are close enough to the finish time just means no one has a chance to come back with a higher bid, but if the previous bidder has bid higher then you still won't win it. The person who bids the highest has still won the auction, not the last person to bid, it just means if someone is complaining then they didn't bid as high as they would go.

Bidding early just means you end up giving someone the chance to up your bid. Leaving it to the last minute also means if someone has already bid higher than you there is no chance for you to come back with a higher offer and end up paying way more than you wanted, just to win it.

And it sure builds the tension waiting those last few seconds to get the timing right. :D The only thing stupid about it is when ebay slows to a crawl in those dying seconds and your bid misses the end of the auction

Bottom line is the one who bid the most wins. Tell those soured bidders to put in a higher bid.

I think sniping is a dirty underhanded way to bid and I practice it religiously

It also keeps me out of trouble. I use to bid the get out bid, then bid, then get...........you see the point. I would get in a pissing match with someone and end up buying an item for more than I could have locally.

eBay Golden Rule: He who has the most gold, rules.

If you bid more, no matter what time you place your bid, you win. Pretty simple, and nothing against any rules.

If I want something bad enough, you WON'T win it from me.

Isn't sniping the same as going in at the last 30sec or so and bidding... just manual... so if your bidding style is that then how can yo uget mad at sniping. I personally have always done things by hand if and if its TRUELY somehting i have to have there is nothing thats going to stop me from having it. All the sniping in the world can't replace the amount of money your willing to spend. SOOO with that said, if you feel that sniping is the way to keep you from spending money foolishly isn't the real problem that you spending money you shouldn't? To me there's nothing wrong with sniping if your using it bc you arent' gonna be around or just don't want to put in the time to be on ebay at the end of auctions. To think that its a way of keeping your spending under control is just duct tape on the leaky ship and blaming it for beating you is sour grapes. I think the best out look to rmemeber ALWAYS is that this is our hobby and you do it for FUN. The minute and I prob really mean the SECOND your getting angry over something or "that's bullsh*t" maybe its time to take a break.

I've told my story many times but auctionsniper saved my marriage.

The main reason I snipe is that I don't want anybody knowing what I am going to bid on until I do. Why should I spend all that time searching to find that hidden auction with the F'ed up title to just have some Kilingon outbid me at the last second.

My ship sank a long time ago

Sniping forces me to set a limit on what I want to spend and if I get out bid, so be it. It's too late to counter bid. Before, I would sit the last 5 minutes of an auction and just keep bidding and bidding and sometimes, not always, but sometimes I would sit back after the smoke cleared and ask myself, "What have I done now?"

It's not just the same, that IS actually sniping.

Using auctionsniper or others is just an automated way of doing it.

Years ago we had a competition on the Tamiyaclub forums to see who could snipe the nearest to an auction end and win. When the challenge you have to beat is down to 1 second and we're all on dialup it's hard to try and match that.

Dial-up sniping......those were the days. I still got my eBay stop watch. That bad boy paid for itself many times over.
