Radio controlled model cars cover car, optima turbo late 80'
Hi all.
I remember a car on the cover of a late 80's rcmc magazine, I'm pretty sure it was an optima pro or turbo, was tested on a beach and from memory was red faded in to white paint. Can anyone remember this mag edition? Or have a picture of it? Was the car I really wanted as a kid, and would live to build one, but it was a long time ago and I'm not totally sure what it was!

Don't think it would have been the pro, that appeared on the cover of Dec 87 RCMC and was in white and blue.

Nice to see people put the wheels on backwards then, too.

Hi - it was a Turbo Optima in Radio Control Model Cars magazine Nov 1986. I’d been looking for it for a while myself and finally found it. I remember it well, I loved the paint job - it inspired me to pick up an airbrush

I remember having that issue of the mag, used to buy it all the time, not sure if I still have them or not.

I've seen Javelins with the wheels mounted both ways but I can't recall having seen it on the same car. It kinda looks odd to me but it could have been done intentionally I guess.

From memory, theres just one design of the turbine wheels... two of them will be the "right" way, the other two the "wrong" one on any car

Actually, that's only true for one knock-off of (I think) The Fox, I can't remember what it's called but gomachv should know it. It had directional wheels made from only one mold and therefore wheels on opposite sides would have the direction reversed. With the Optima, Kyosho was smart/rich enough to make separate molds of left- and right-side wheels for the outer wheel halves.
Check it out here:

EDIT: The clone of The Fox was called the Killer; this box photo shows the single-directional wheels, "rotating" in opposite directions on each side:

I can only confirm that my re-re Javelin has left and right wheels. ... and I can add nothing further on this topic as I am very new to Kyosho products.

The original Optima & Javelin wheels were also molded in left and right sides. Of course, if you're not paying attention when mounting them on the axles, you can easily mix them up and put right-side wheels on the left, and vice-versa. The same thing happens all the time with directional tires, like the Tamiya Blackfoot/Monster Beetle tires. You always see examples of those with wheels mixed up and tire treads pointing in different directions.

Re: Radio controlled model cars cover car, optima turbo late 80'
interesting - was somehow under the impression that only one mold had been made... I stand corrected
