Opinions Wanted: Kyosho Lazer ZX-5 Readyset (RTR)

Post by oldskool »

Can anyone share their experience with either the ZX-5 in general and the Readyset specifically?

I am looking to find out if it's a good runner and what the differences are between the pro kit and rtr. THere is no real good information I could find, and I looked.

I'm planning on running this around, but not racing it. I'm partial to 4wd, but my other choice is a B4RS. Thoughts?

Yup, I'm going rtr on a runner so I can spend more time working on the vintage stuff.

Thanks in advance!

I have the RTR ZX5 and I love it. I did have an electronics problem when I frist got it but after my bitching at the store owner he finally listened and found that yes I was right and not crazy. It got fixed right away. It was a pinched wire under the reciever.
The only thing I don't like about it is the way the body mounts, four posts on the chasis. There aren't very many aftermarket parts for it as far as changing rims, ball end colors. Other than that I think its a blast.

I race a ZX5, and love it. I have moved back and forth between a few different 4wd cars, and have (I think) settled on the ZX5. I am getting ready to pick up the SP upgrade kit, the few guys I have talked to about it say it smooths out the car some...doesnt feel "rough" to me, but I will try it anyways.

I had one of the first ZX-5's when it came out 2 years ago. I'm not a throttle jammer and don't have big crashes but it used to break shock tower mounts, front arm braces, front hubs, spur gears stripped easily and the shocks leaked their contents out even when the car was stored on a shelf.

Now, that all sounds really negative, but I know Kyosho are one of the few companies that constantly evolve their parts. Within a year the bits that break had all been beefed up or hop-ups released. The car is really underrated and you can't go wrong with the RTR. Spares are cheap, the drivetrain is very free (and sealed - no stones in your belt pulley) & with Mr. Losi working for Kyosho & the SP upgrade released, Kyosho is a company on the up & I believe they are serious about getting to the top in 1/10th off-road.

Shame that the car isn't popular in the UK - there are no team drivers to support at club level, and it's a nightmare trying to get parts information over here. For those reasons, I'm sorry to say that the Lazer will remain a rare sight on the UK racing scene.
