Hello,

I am new to this site. just starting to look around and getting good info. I have pulled 2 old rc cars that have not seen action in over 20 years. I have a gold pan RC10 and a blackfoot truck that I am going to see if i can get them back to life. http://1drv.ms/1YyyFQM

So far I have torn down the rc10 to clean and look for any damage. It looks to be in good shape overall.

A picked up a used DX3x spectrum controller with sr 301 2.4 receivers. (someone i knew wasnt using it anymore)
a ACME b1006 speed contoller(someone i knew wasnt using it anymore)
using stock rc10 motor and gearing.
got a new venom 5000 Nmih batter and charger.

After getting it all together, i took it for a test run.
it seemed to run well but afterwords I noticed it smelled very hot. after closer inspection, i found that the speedcontoller started to melt.

I could use some help and advice. Has been a while since i have messed with rc's and they have changed a bit in the last 20 years. Im not sure if my issue is with the battery power, motor draw, bad speed controller?

Does anyone have any recommendations for new speed contoller with my stock motor? or should i go with new motor and speed control?

From what I can see the Acme ESC should handle a stock motor, but doesn't have any heat sinks, and depending on motor gearing may have gotten overheated. There are allot of great ESC's available, and depending on how much you plan on running the buggy, it may be worth going Brushless. Here is a link on recommended parts. Hope this helps.

with that much capacity on your battery, you may have just run the system for too long and overheated the ESC. Most of the older equipment was really designed to run for 5-6 minutes, tops, with a 1200-1400 mAh battery. With almost 4 times the capacity, you could end up overheating things running too long.

some of the new brushless systems are pretty inexpensive, many people like the xerun or ezrun systems from hobbywing, or the other option is a pull out system from associated RTR kits. These are well suited to longer run times and much less maintenance.

That makes sense, I may have run it too long.

Should you only run these 5 min at a time?

Can you run the brushless motors and esc's longer?

is there a specific model that ezrun/xerun system that has good history with stock RC10's?

that is good starting point, but you can get anything that is advertised for 1/10th and off road and you will be ok.

Ive been using these hobbywing escs for a while with the green tacon motors.
