Vintage racing rules/eligibility

Hello there.

Just found my old spare car (well some of it) from way back when I was racing in the 90's. I'm interested (possibly) in racing vintage, but I don't see too much information about it in the UK. It seems popular in the states and it appears to be pre 94 with stock motors. Do the same 'rules' apply in the UK? Are modifications permitted or must the car use standard parts only?

I guess it all depends on where you are in the country. Dan is active in the vintage class with his modified JRX2 so you might want to have a look through this thread...

The IconicRC Vintage Revival meeting (run by John Weston of IconicRC - check out the Facebook group) has been the only truly vintage-only race meeting that I have been involved with. It was a one off 'fun' meeting that attracted over 60 drivers - mostly competing in more than one class. The classes were divided into age catagories & between 2wd & 4wd - but other than that rules for electrics, tyres & mods were very relaxed, bonus points however were awarded for using period equipment & upgrades. I'm guessing it was a meeting on a par in terms of numbers as the Vonats in the U.S?

I normally just race my vintage cars in with the regular modern racers at my local club meets, which is why I tend to try & run the quickest motors etc that I dare to try & keep up, generally I do ok with them & I love the reaction you get when people realise they've been beaten by a 25yr old car!

There are a couple of clubs I know of that have quite a strong vintage following & often run a seperate heat/race for the older cars, these are Caldicote Racers & Kidderminster have been having a vintage race as part of their Summer Series, The West Bridgeford club are also planning a vintage heat for their forth coming Winter Series. In each case I don't think there are any particularly stringent rules.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm in shropshire so I guess my nearest is Kidderminster which is not that far away. My local club would be a bit of fun in amongst the modern stuff I think so I might go down and have a look.

Still need to build the car up first which is also a JRX Pro SE Like yours Dan.

Ok fair enough, I'll get the bits cleaned up and take some photos, nothing too exciting there though yet :)

East Shrewsbury Buggy Racing Club http://www.eastshrewsburybrc.com/ are also running a vintage class in the Shropshire Indoor Winter Series, in association with IconicRC so the rules should be pretty relaxed, usually just restricted to the year of the chassis.

I raced at the iconic RC meeting with my FT B3, had a great day out, ended up having Jamie Booth pitted next to me, he turned out to be a great bloke and a good laugh. I run this car at my club (Broxtowe) but with a 8.5 brushless set up, mainly for reliability/maintenance purposes, but I did run a brushed set up at the Iconic meet. I also installed a B4 slipper assembly just to bullet proof the tranny a bit more. The car goes really well, but it will of course never keep up with a well driven modern mid motor car, but I can tell you I am never last!! There is certainly some interest ast our club and I do think retro racing will get more and more popular across the country. I would say give it a go and embarrass a few people with a 20 year old car!

Wow nice, was Jamie running his old Egress?

So do we need to run brushed motors in vintage then?

You can run whatever motor and battery you want, unless a club decides on a limit there are no rules about what motor, battery or tyres you can use. You got bonus points at the A1 Revival if you ran a brushed motor, mechanical speed controller, nimhs or nicads, period correct tyres, 27 or 40mhz radio, even if it was unique at the event or rare. In the end the extra bonus points made little difference to the final results.
