Atari's RC10T Ad Replica Paint Job

Hello!
Had so many pics of my latest paint scheme thought I'd post up the process of the RC10T Box Art Replica from back in the day.

My plan was to make as an exact Truck as possible as that in the ad.

See snaps below.

I know there's been several of these over the years, but there was always something on the paint job of the decals that was just a LITTLE off.

Anyway, here's my take at it.

Of Course every paint scheme has to include the body; I'm using Team Blue Groove's RC10T body- slightly thicker than the original, and has a pull-away on the outside, which is nice.

As Always thoroughly clean the body with some soap ( I used just standard dish soap). and make sure it's completely dry.

and as you apply masking tape, TAKE YOUR TIME, and ensure that every little fold, edge, and bent is properly DOWN, so that you reduce a chance of a run or unwanted paint to mess up your freshly painted body.

With the pull-away makes it much easier to cut the body out ahead of time and drill the holes.

1st paint process probably the hardest; making the window masks and applying masking tape to the roll cage area.

This is my challenge with any body. Anywho an hour or so of painstakingly masking it out (I recommend listening to calm, soothing music so that you don't crush the body half-way through in a moment of rage).

Used Scotch brand 2" tape for the window masking, and 3M Trip making vinyl tape for the roll cage.

OK, done with the bed.

My goal was to get that airbrushed black-edged, fading into blue look. Ending up lightly rattle-canning a pearl Blue, and back it heavily with black, which took over in most areas,

Although it wasn't airbrushed I thought it came out pretty good.

OK, after doing another replica paint job for my runner, I decided I was going to do the white next.

Usually you'd want to do lightest color first, but masking all the white around more edges gave more opportunity for paint bleeding. SO, I masked away for the 2nd part of the paint scheme.

OK, another fun step- masking off for the silver pinstripe.

on my racer body I decided to try and save time and use Pactra's pine strip sticker (check ebay). I was not satisfied with the result so this time I decided to use paint.

using the colors that were already there I overlapped my striping tape and drew and cut circle 90's toe the turns using a air can and and large marker.

all marked off, ready for red.

Red is done!

Now things start speeding up!

take off the remainder of the masking (except the window masks) and apply the last color!

IT'S FINALLY DONE!!!!!

came out pretty good, I was proud of this one, shelf queen body for sure.

Time to apply some original decals!

since the ad truck had a few decals that never came in the kit, gonna have to shop around for a few.

Also, in the ad the front bumper was never applied- only filled in with a marker the best I can tell from the instruction manual. As well the upper window shield and window net were never applied.

Will have to shop around for the exact right side decals, which I believe now thanks for the re-release of the RC10 World's a few of those decals will be perfect.

The applied decals so far are actually from the original sheet I'd had since walking into the hobby shop in Junior High in 95' and buying what he had in stock at the time.

Applied the number plates as they are, and outlined them with a red shadow using a thing red sharpie.

It looks pretty good mounted up on the shelf queen.

Have to change out the rear rims still that were modified to fit, as well as a replacement front bumper as that one is painted white to hide the fact it was dyed at one time


The front wheel are correct and as I understand were only in a few of the first kits that came out before switched to a "Team Associated" Labelled- 2 ribbed with long knobs front tire.

Finally got the correct rear rims! and another front bumper while I was at it. Ebay is awesome

The rears are Pro-line Pro-86 "Stubbie"s which have the appearance of Team Associated's 1st rear tires, although as I understand the VERY first rear tires look similar to the front ones in that they have NO sidewall labeling.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Besides getting the correct side decals and a fresh-up rebuild of the shelf queen car I'm good for now

Nice paint job! I'm going to follow your instructions pretty closely. I'm exploring doing the same thing as my original RC10T body is on it's last leg.

Curious what paint you used for the red and blue colors? Looking for the closest red and blue from the original box art.
