My first Ultima?

So I picked this up on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320184091219&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=011

I bought a new graphite chassis at the LHS for $20 (price included a set of foams for the 10L) before finding the above auction. I planned to introduce the chassis to the drill press to accept RC10 parts. My plans changed when the Ultima? arrived and I realized all of the screws lined up! The chassis is the same as one owned by Badhoopty, I'll add the link after a quick search.

I have several Scorpions but no other Kyosho cars. With this purchase, I now have a few questions and plans to convert this back to a buggy.

I believe this to be an Ultima 2 with a truck conversion. Are the components (trany, bulkheads, arms) the same as the original Ultima?

Did the original Ultima have the red anodized shocks that are similar to the Scorpion but with a larger bore?

What size are the pan screws?

Thanks!

It's really quite impossible to say much without some better pics but it looks like an ultima pro to me, using ultima-ST parts , long shocks in the front (pro2?) plus an optima mid wing mount.

Since you'll be using the graphite chassis, why not leave those kyosho gold shocks on it?
The original ultima had the same size red shocks as the scorpion (at least in diameter) and you'll need the alu short shockplates for them

It could also be a conversion from a Pro2: in which case you'd have more different parts: arms, uprights and rear bulkhead. But the upperdeck points to a standard Pro.
What material is the lower chassis?

(I built my own conversion with RC10T arms long before kyosho released the ST. It's a real big fun conversion, handling a lot better than the standard ST because of the large wheelbase. I'd be happy to give you directions if you'd decide to try that. You'll need HPI MT axles also and the parma beetle body fits like a glove.)

looks like an Outlaw Ultima Truck to me. This was Kyosho's attempt to enter the growing truck class. It is basically an Ultima II (Kelron chassis with upper deck) with large front shocks and shock tower, front and rear truck body mounts and truck wheels and tires. You shouldn't have a problem creating an Ultima buggy from it, but obviously you will have to get a short front shock tower and shocks and a body.

It also has gold shocks plus a wing mount and tire-wheel combo from way before the outlaw
That's why I was asking what the chassis was made of; if it's the brownish anodised alu, then this is an ultima pro buggy converted to truck specs. From the ebay picture it didn't look like the kelron stuff to me.
Leaving the long shocks and high tower in the front would be an era correct modification for a buggy actually.
you'll need a new bumper too ;)

Thanks for the info guys. The chassis is kelron and has been replaced with the new chassis. This chassis is pretty much bomb proof, stiff as a board. I would have kicked myself had I drilled this out for RC10 parts before getting the ultima in the mail!

The rims look similar to those seen in the Outlaw ad. They cleaned up nice, but I plan to scale down with the shorter shocks. Mr. Ed, I too thought the shocks were gold Kyosho but they were not. The shocks were really the only let down (white plastic up front and beat up assoc gold rear). Everything else is like new with the exception of the ditched truck bumper.

The xx body fits like a glove and has found a new home!

looks cool already.
Would look great with the 2.2 RB5's optional yellow rims.
You can easily fit the RB5 front C-carriers and knuckles.
They are the trailing type, so the wheelbase becomes shorter, but that should be fine witth the longer chassis. Or you can try the flipped front arms trick I use to extend the wheelbase. Will try to put some pics up and a link in this tread

edit: that ebay pic was such crap: I thought the wheels were yellow

Was that body NIP? Man, I really need one new.... FYI, it is the XX-CR body.

Are those hexes in the rear offset with a spacer?

You may have to use modern ultima wheels with that set-up or you'll be out of regulation on the width.
The modern wheels have less offset built-in them.
If you're still out of the legal width, I can trade you for the standard size.
Or you could try Hotbodies wheels: I'm using a set of fronts on the front of mine (with 12mm hex, not the losi type) and they sit real inwards.

Yeah, the kicker is I bought it at the LHS for $6 bucks to try and fit on a tub. Two bodies were there at the time but I only bought one. I went back for the other last week... gone :(

Here is the fit on a tub chassis...

UGH! I will find one eventually. Heck, I just found a NIP Losi JRXT body. I have NEVER seen one, even on ebay and have been looking for one for 5+ years. They are around.

Good eye Mr. Ed... what you see in the pic is a bearing that slid out. I purchased a set of shock towers and bulkhead brace for the Kyosho Corvette. I cut the rear body mount hump and flipped the rear tower. Two of the mounting holes lined up perfect and I had to drill another two for mounting. The rear stay is perfect IMO. I replaced the shocks with the red Kyoshos and then scored this...

The Duratrax shocks look much like the gold Kyoshos. I probably would have used those shocks with the tall shock towers instead. When the rims arrive, I'll update pics.

Looks like there's a full set of the oval version (sideways?) tires and rims inthere!

Can you make some pics on the bulkheadmod's you made? I didn't catch what you want to tell.
