Novak Super Rooster with 3 motors?

Post by MelvinsArmy »

Does anyone know if I'll blow up my Super Rooster by hooking it up to 3 motors? I know it's supposed to have unlimited motor turns and I believe 10 cells capacity. I was going to use either 3 silver cans or 3 Tamiya Sport Tuned motors, so the motors aren't exactly hot. I was also planning to use just one 6 cell pack. I realize if it does work my run times will be short, but I'm just curious if powering 3 mild motors will be too much for it. Any thoughts?

3 mild motors would probably be ok. I would hook up one of the candidate motors to another one as a slave motor and see how much current it pulls. Then short out the slave motor which should give you a decent heavy load and check that. Multiply by three and that is what the ESC is probably going to be subject to.

I wish I had a voltmeter. I was thinking I'd hook everything up, drive it around for a minute and just check to see if the ESC was getting hot. Not very scientific I suppose.

I'm sure it will be fine with mild motors. It's the amp draw that is the issue and 3 27 Turn motors is a much lower amp draw than the 320 amps the Super Rooster is rated for. A Mabuchi 540 stalled draws 70 Amps at 7.2 volts. So all 3 motors not including losses will be 210 amps, stalled. You're good to go.
I miss brushed motors in that hazy, everything seemed better when I was a kid, kind of way.

Thanks knixdad! I had a hunch it would be okay, but I've never done anything quite like this before and I didn't want to risk burning up the ESC because I really like Super Roosters.

I have a PDI Turbo Zeta that I really want to use, but I think it might need a new internal battery and setting it up is sort of complicated. I'm getting the truck up and running with the SR, I may or may not stick with it. Ideally it would be nice to switch over to the Zeta because it will take 2 6 cell packs and is supposed to be virtually indestructible under any and all conditions.

Hello

I'm not sure the rooster would be ok for 3 motors.
For 2 it's probably ok but 3 is too much.
In order to calculate try to estimate the running time with one motor and your battery and the hottest motor the ESC can handle
If you are running 25mn with a 540 motor and only 6 minutes withe the hottest motor and the same battery it's ok, if you have 10mn rune time it's too much.
I hope i'm clear with this explanation.
