ESC to power BEC RX - voltmeter but little knowledge

Alright chaps, I've been lurking on the Kyosho section of rc10talk for a few weeks now and had some great advice from members.
I have a Kyosho Beetle based on a wrecked Scorpion that had been in the loft for over 20 years. I have an old ESC which works but only if I plug a 4AA battery pack into the receiver (Acoms AR2/27 with BEC). I was hoping that the ESC would pass 5v odd required for the RX along the control connector into the ch2 RX pins. However the ESC is only passing 1.59v which is not enough to power RX therefore having to use additional battery pack. Is this just the nature of the cheap ESC? I never ran ESC's back in the 80's so still a bit hazy on it.
