Dipping into the Kyosho Pond

As some may know, I am a professed Losi guy. But my first "race" cars were Ultimas. I had a standard and then a turbo, ran them in dirt oval wedge, then later the sprint car class (with an RCRC conversion & custom chassis).

So with a K car popping up in the BST, I decided I needed one to complete the "big 3" of the time.

Got lots of little things to do, hex hardware & refresh the shocks. Counter gear & spur assembly need attention as well. Didnt do a full teardown, just a quick clean up out of the box it came in:

Looks great! Although I still haven't forgiven them for discontinuing parts so quickly... Bought an Outlaw Rampage Pro right as they were discontinuing them that ended up missing transmission parts that I just could never find so was never able to run... DARN you Kyosho!! *shakes fist*

I have been thinking this is an Ultima II, but I think it is the Ultima Pro...Gold Shocks, front & rear sway bars, ball diff, rear motor guard. Both had yellow wheels & kelron chassis.

What say you Kyosho experts?

Based on it's FRP chassis and aluminum front shock tower, I'm leaning toward Ultima II. I think the Ultima Pro had a flat aluminum chassis. BUT!!!, that front tower looks really thick, so it's possible someone crashed this car, broke the orginal frp tower and bent the chassis only to replace the parts with a homebrew thicker front tower and a easier to source kelron chassis...which also explains the sway bars, gold shocks, turnbuckles, etc.

It has the UMW-1 wing stay on it, I know that was an option for the PRO XL but was it a standard part for the PROII?

According to my parts guide it was standard on the ultima II
There was a turbo ultima II, pretty sure this is where it started. Does it have universals?

Yes, universals. The front shock tower is a home made item, the rear tower is black FRP.

Maybe it is a Pro with the II Kelron chassis?

I stick with my Turbo Ultima II diagnosis.

Looks like a nice candidate for your return to Kyosho cars. Looking forward to updates!

The Turbo Ultima II had green wheels. Also, it did not come with a motor guard, but the Ultima Pro did. Could have been added on later.

Whats nice about kyosho is it dosent matter too much what you start with. Its possible to have a heap of 2wd buggy parts from the K car line up and scrap em together to make your own custom job. Im currently working on a triumph/ prox/ ultima... Talk about 3 un related cars! But it will work.

First hurdle...counter/spur gear cluster. I know Thorp made some, didnt Robinson make a set also? I'd love to go 48 pitch (if it wasnt an arm and a leg), but not completely opposed to 32 pitch, so stock isnt out of the question :)
