RC10 "Resto-Mod"

Hello everyone. I have been following this site now for about 2 1/2 years. I was looking to get into the RC hobby and stumbled upon this site. I quickly caught the bug and wanted an RC10 of my own. I went on Ebay and purchased two incomplete cars. Thinking between the two I should have a 90% complete roller. Both have been heavily used so I have no worries with running them. Both chassis were drilled. One of the chassis seems to be slightly warped. So I disassembled it and threw all the extra parts in a small bucket. Never know when one of those may come in handy. Now I am looking for some guidance. I want to run modern wheels, and I really like the Detonator body from JConcepts (I'm probably in the minority on that one LOL). I have thought about running a Velinion motor and ESC, but I have also heard good things from friends who use Castle products. I have a spare Traxxas servo and TQi transmitter/receiver. Just looking for some direction. Opinions welcome.

The rear arms are Andy's. The screws holding the back wheels together seem to be hitting the arms on the back side of the wheel. Not sure why this is happening.

Welcome! It looks like you have some nice parts there.

If you can see the screws protruding through the back side of the rim you have to long of screws. They should be flush with the back side of the rim.

Thanks. I'll check on that. Shouldn't be a big deal though because I don't plan to run those wheels. Just seemed kind of odd to me.

They're not bad for the money. My experience has been that they're not real smooth at low speeds, though (I mean like walking speed).

Honestly, it's pretty hard to beat the Hobbywing EZrun 60A ESC for an inexpensive sensorless unit on a basher or entry level racer. I have one on my gold pan powering an Atomik 3,300 KV can on 3S with 24/81 gearing. It's smooth, very programmable and glitch free thus far. Was only $50 shipped with program card. I'm actually going to a Hobbywing ESC on my Prolite 4x4, too, as the AE ESCs have proven incapable of handling 3S in that truck. That's not the 60A EZrun, though; it's the 150A Xerun.

As for wheels, you can go a few different routes, but the easiest is to simply ream a set of B4 wheels to fit the 1/4" axles, and then just smash the larger pins into the wheels by tightening the nut.

I had never really thought about Hobbywing. I will look into that. The reason I thought about Velinion is because I have a couple of Slashes and like the performance of that motor and esc. However, I would feel guilty putting that combo in an RC10. I like the B4 wheels, but the more I think about it; I may just use the stock wheels and get some new tires off Ebay. How will the smaller wheels and tires affect performance?

Actually, this car had a broken shock tower when I got it. The other car's shock towers were very dirty and I couldn't get them clean to my liking. So, I went on Ebay and ordered the aluminum ones.

I'm trying to decide between the JConcepts Hazard wheels and the stock wheels. I might occasionally run at the track, but this build will mostly be a yard/road runner. Any advice?
