Johnboys Dirtoval thread.

Ok, so made it back to the states. I'm still waiting on my RC10 Classic to come in. They mailed it to an old address so awaiting Tower's correction. Should be next Friday they say. Meanwhile I'm trying to spend some time with the family but I can't sit still. So pulled out this collection I bought off a buddy shortly after leaving. Looking good for the most part. The Team Car was beautiful with hardly a scratch on it....but it's all swissed up. AGH. Then the Graphite, the nose looks like they narrowed it. Then someone put on an aluminum shim to get the arms back out where they should be. So might have to keep my eyes out for a replacement chassis. The late graphite is nice. The worlds car is beautiful. Smooth shocks on them too. Transmissions need a little freeing up. There is one complete RPM trans and looks to be another case in there. I'll have to do some research and see if the rest of the gears are in there. So excited to have something to do this winter.

Thanks guys, well the Goldie is my old one but now have the parts to finish it. :lol: Only been sitting here on a shelf without the battery cup and a replacement bulkhead.

Ok, so broke out the late graphite to do some mocking up. I still have a mess in the garage to clean up from the move while I was gone. Tons of boxes and stuff so I have no idea where most of my crap is. So today's goal was to scratch the itch. Tore into the car to identify what needs replacing and such. This car has Rayborn rear arms. I don't think I have ever had their products on any of my stuff before. I just thought they were Losi arms. Anywho. Plan is to run this car against some of the purpose built Dirt Oval cars for some fun and to bring back some memories for others. So I'll be putting a 17.5 brushless in it. I swapped out the trans to a RPM and it will run a Slipper Eliminator. So far looks like I need to order full bearings, some new RPM cups, screw kit and possibly order/mount modern foams on it. I will probably make two bodies. One will be a legal spec body for playing and a 90s style EDM for when it sits on the shelf. Progress will be slow as I'm just trying to get settled in, the holidays and prepping for the Syracuse Indoor Kart race.

To run the Custom Works foams...can I get away with that adapter thing or do I just need to put the whole hub (3241?) on?

To mount the Custom Works foams on the rear, the 1/4 to 3/16 reduction on the rear axle is working against you. To get past this problem, I converted over to B4 rear hub carriers (Team Associated #9584) and used the MIP #8125 CVD kit. This setup takes 3/16 x 3/8 bearings for the rear hubs. To allow appropriate clearance the rear hubs were trimmed to eliminate the outer two mounting wholes, and Custom Works rear spacers (Custom Works part 7208) are being used.

Another option would be to increase the hole in the Custom Works rear spacers to 1/4 inch (originals are 3/16). From your pictures, it looks like this would work with your current setup, but I ended up ruining a set of spacers as the holes I drilled were not perfectly centered.

Thank you. I'll get back on the builds at a later date. Someone posted a pic of the latest progress on a local track so now I want to go play. Set up my buddy's Havoc 2.1 NYSE and that just fueled my passion. So going to take a few cars down there and have some fun.

Ok, so for not putting any effort into these cars setup wise, had a really good running car in the Late Graphite!!! But as the speeds increased, the shocks started showing signs of leaking like crazy. Car was really loose. But I accomplished my goal. Just to go out there and have some fun!!! I had a pack come out in the main but was not in last at the time. :lol: I think with a little effort in setting up shocks and ride height, I could have something for these boys!

Ok, so let's edit this thing and make it a build thread. We'll start with the Late Graphite as that's the car I'm currently focused on. It was pretty good out of the box...literally how I picked it up off a buddy. Speed was off and I'm really lost on what gearing to throw at it. I put the RPM trans in it and now starting to work on improving the shocks. I was at first planning on just playing around but now I really want to give my buddy a run for his money. Plus, this kid needs to get punked by me and a RC10!!! So with some help from Mr Woods and hopefully y'all, we can get this thing up there.

Slapped some scrap vinyl on an old junker edm body I had laying around.

His lap counts are in the 70s. My goal is to get more consistant with the setup and track to improve from 62-64 to the 70s.

Also, since some of the car counts were low, the big block EDM guys ran our Small Block class...like Ross. These guys are super smooth and I'm thinking the RC10 doesn't have a chance YET. So goal is to throw on the Nastruck body and give this class a shot while working on improving the RC10.

Work has slowed lately on improving this car...this is one of the reasons.

And now my buddy had me put something together for him to race against me. So a Terminator based Havoc.


Now onto setup. Last weekend I put 30wt oil, #2 pistons in the shocks. I put gray springs on the rear with what I thought was silver and gold in the fronts. The car bounced like a lowrider down the track. Also it would sling into the turns where it felt like it would lean on the RR and push. If I didn't let out, I could get around the track with the wheel turned full left. Picking up the left front too. So thinking I'll go up on the oil wt. Also picked up a used oval spring kit as my old springs were so old I couldn't tell what colors were what. Think I'll try gray or golds on the rear, RF red and a LF green as that's what most are using. I know my battery is centered so copying their setups probably won't help. But it's a start.

Also, I need help with the gearing. I believe the RPM is a 2.6 something and I'm primarily running against guys with the 2.4 trans. I was geared at 64P/88 Spur while my buddy was running a 58/104. I'm still off the pace (setup was a big factor). I don't know how to convert the difference.
