Back in after 20 years

Post by Vantard »

Hello all from south east Pennsylvania!

I haven't messed with rc in 20 years, and am finally settling down enough to get back in. I started out with tamiya, racing on a carpeted stadium short track. I did it every weekend racing my grasshopper, hornet and Blackfoot. Finally saved enough money for an rc10 and magnum jr. I don't remember what happened to any of them (think my dad sold them when I moved out) Saw an rc10 set up for street or something at a hobby store used for cheap and picked it up in the early 90's and screwed with that for a while. someone had made mid motor no idea really what kind of racing this rc10 is set up for. I have been researching it online for the last couple day, it has an mip trans with slipper clutch, wider a-arms and low shock mounts.

Hopefully the picture will show up, it has a days of thunder nascar body on it. Would like to make it back into a buggy and just recently purchased another rc10 on eBay that looks stock

Very nice. Kyosho platinum rear shocks, trinity fronts. Striker II tires, Mcallister lowering kit, andys front arms and possibly rear body mount, A&L steering. It's got a lot going on 8)

Thanks! Any idea what kind if racing this would have been built for in the early 90's? It has a stock car body so I'm assuming road oval, but it's really dang slow!

Sapphire was a 17 turn motor and that esc won't take a hot motor so your best off making sure everything is efficient. Check the trans, pinion mesh, wheel bearings and make sure the gearing is right. It may be geared way down if they were running a short oval track.

Yes, I got that esc and mostly ran it in tamiya on stock motors, I found the manual for the esc online but it doesn't say anything about the turns of the motor. I assume a 21 turn or higher would be better and change the gearing. It's really not that fun of a car to drive, how slow it is.

Would you change the motor or the esc? I'm totally new to brushless and probably won't get into that

Start with gearing, a 17 shouldn't be ridiculously slow, just not crazy fast either. Everything nowadays is so stupid fast out of the box.

I always liked the 14 turn onyx motor and a decent speed control myself. Just for bashing.

Do you know where i would start looking for gearing? The trans is early stealth I guess since it says mip and has a slipper clutch instead of primary diff like my first rc10 had.

Thanks for your help!

It's a mip? I'm not sure the ratios on those but I'm sure someone will chime in

Where is your gearing now? Does the motor or speed control get hot?
