'93 Works YZ10, welcome to the family
I am such a sucker for well-kept vintage chassis. Especially these vintage Yokomohmygodthisissoexpensive...
I started my YZ10 collection with a 870c that needed some restoration. Then I found a '94 runner, which I had those custom delrin arms made for it. Then I found that wonderful new '94 price-of-a-soul chassis. What next? A '93 WCS would be nice, but I do think it looks too much like a '94 to be worth the investment, despite some differences (2mm belt - whoop dee doo). I always thought the '93 Works was a very cool chassis, as it had that neat looking front steering brace and, as a whole, represented the pinnacle of what was achieved with a 870c foundation. "If ever I were to top off my YZ10 collection, that would be the car to do it with," I thought to myself. So I went trolling around eBay and, almost like the internet were reading my mind, this nice example showed up. It wasn't cheap, but how often does an opportunity like this show up? So I bought it. How could I not?
This example is very lighly used, with the only real signs of use showing up in the wing (not visible from the pictures, but it has a few scuff marks). Everything appears to be original, including the Pirelli belts! Came with original manual in Japanese, and a nice set of black rims with shallow pin tires. Looks great sitting next to its '94 successor...
It is interesting how the belt tensioner adjustment changed between this chassis and the '94. Here, you loosen the four screws in the rear in the upper deck and then use your hand/s to push the upper deck forward by the appropriate amount to tighten the front belt. That is not terribly accurate, as it depends on your being able to hold the top deck in place at the right position with one hand, as you tighten down the screws with the other hand (maybe I'm being dumb about this and there's an easier way to do this?). The little turnbuckle supplied with the '94 chassis makes this adjustment vastly more precise.

Really nice car you get there !!!
I'm right with you, the 93' is the more interesting YZ10 to get.
It's the latest version of the sexy YZ10 "works" edition which is my favorite, even if I also like the " world" version.
"worlds" doesn't get this nice vintage look melt with a great search of performance.

Awesome car, they look very nice together
This would also be one of my favorite cars after the optima.
Always got my eyes open for these on ebay but like you said they just go for a lot of money and haven't had the extra cash to pull the trigger. At least I can get my fix on Rc10talk with all the lovely pics.

Gooooorgeous, super example my friend, and to add, a big fave of mine, and its hard to pick a fave from these early nineties Yokomo's, each one in turn has its own killer draw!

Thanks, everyone. One of these days, I'll put a body and undertray on it. It did come with a body that is actually painted pretty nicely, but it is a bit worn and I'd like to put something fresh on this.

Re: '93 Works YZ10, welcome to the family
Took me some time to get around to putting a body on this one. I figured since the '93 Works is quite unique, it is deserving of a unique paint scheme, in the sense that I've yet to see this type of paint scheme on a YZ10. Rather than flames or a Masami tribute, I went for a Senna tribute with a Marlboro McLaren livery...
As some of you may or may not know, the "red" is not actually red, but instead a fluorescent red. Looks like orange under some lighting, and like red under other lighting, but assuredly it is fluorescent red. I used Tamiya's fluorescent red for this, since Pactra had a batch that looked pink. The masking wasn't absolutely perfect, but it was good enough, and of course since the YZ10 body is not a F1 body, I had to rearrange a few decals, and in some cases, there wasn't enough room for a few decals (e.g., Shell decal on the front nose). I did not want to risk ruining the wing by painting it, so I left it as is and threw a Marlboro decal on there.
I'm rather pleased with it overall. Now, the only "naked" YZ10 I have left is my '91 Works. I am toying with the idea of a Williams FW15 livery on that one. I'll have to see if the body "flows" nicely with the FW15 color scheme...

Re: '93 Works YZ10, welcome to the family
Hi, I too like everyone else seem to like the 93' also... Pretty much for the same reason you do. Although my yokomo craving has only started recently ( well like alot of people, had purchased a 870c in about 91 and used it couple of times only on the road and then it was packed away for 22 years and only resurfaced recently and is still in top nick, and thats when this yokomo bug/obsession started...i have no idea how or why....but they just grab you for some reason...?!)
I now have 3 870c's/yz10's and a wcs 91. I would really like to get a 93 but as you say you need to sell your soul for these things!
I really like your work and your video's etc and have picked up alot of info from them! Its been a cool learning experience so thanks and i really dig your paint schemes too! The Marlboro one looks great!
Dug your retro fluoro 870 color scheme, i did a very similiar one on mine...hope u dont mind! Although my flames arent as good as i have yet to work out how you actually did it and i dont have a air brush setup...yet!
I am eyeing of a wcs 92 and have also lined up a 94' runner too so will be adding more to my collection and hopefully one day a 93'.
Thanks for all your info and vids etc they have been great and very informative in a no bs type of way! Look forward to seeing more of your stuff!!

Re: '93 Works YZ10, welcome to the family
Thanks for the nice comments, and I'm glad you like the videos. I'm always trying to make my videos more informative, since I'm learning as I go. So, my newer videos on my old Yokomos tend to be more accurate than my older videos. In any case, I agree there is something quite special about the YZ10. Over the course of about a year, I've gone from having zero YZ10s to having eight. Just can't seem to get enough of them...
As for my bodies, for all of them, I use masking tape and rattle cans. No airbrushes here. Feel free to copy any of them - I don't mind. For the fluorescent 870 body that I did, it was a little tricky, because it's pink flames over a yellow-into-green body. Generally, you do the darkest colors first, so that they don't bleed through the lighter colors. By that thinking, on that body, you would do green, then pink, then yellow, but that is inconsistent with the masking scheme. So what I did was to mask out the flames and start with green, then do yellow, and then back that in white. Then, I removed the masking tape and put the pink down (it was really Pactra fluorescent red, but the batch that I bought my can from was a different batch, and so it looks pink), and backed it in white. There is a small amount of bleeding of the "pink" through the yellow, but the white backing over the yellow helps to hide it a little bit. I intend on doing something similar for my '91 works when I get around to it. Just remember that the fluorescent colors are rather thin and so you need to be patient with the first coating so that there is no running of the paint (do a light first coating). You may need to do up to three coats - light, light, med/heavy - and then back it in white. It's the white backing that really brings out the color.

Re: '93 Works YZ10, welcome to the family
No problem!
Thanks for the info! I havent touched rc's since about 93ish so the only other paint job i did was on my Tamiya Manta Ray in all white that still looks like i did it yesterday! So when i was getting into the Yokomo's i saw your vid's and your paint schemes on your older YZ10 and the other blue/black one you had (forgot the model) i ended up copying both as they would be my second and third rc paint job attempt so kept it simple( ie i didnt do the flames)
Both came out well but stupid me for got to clean the inside of the shell or sand it( as i was a little too keen to get started) and while the fluoro seems to have stuck like glue the blue/black has come off a bit so i have to re do it...properly!
As for the fluoro i didnt find it too hard ( i have sprayed Lot if things in my time so my technique isnt too bad) but i had no idea about the 'backing in white'. It did cross my mind after about the 15 coats of fluoro !!!!! Ha! I ended up backing the yellow on my shell with another standard not fluoro yellow which helped.
What about your fluoro wing on the blue/black car? Thats not backed in white is it? I did the same fluoro yellow using a Gokuru ( i think thats the bame) wing and i forgot how many coats i did! I gave up trying to get it solid and not a little translucent but in the end didnt mind the effect.
As for your 'collection' i think i am heading the same way....! I have four (albeit not as nice as your ones) and everytime i say that'll do the. Another cracker pops up! I have stopped myself for now as i have gone a little nuts in the past four months going from a stock 870 and mantaray (both originals) to 3 more Yokes and a RC8.2e !!! Plus all the batteries and chargers etc so.....but its hard to stop! I dont even race!!
You have 8 you say....wow...
Ohi was going to ask....i notice you have JC racing wheels on your older YZ...what did you do re the width issue if the car? Wider arms or running rears on the front?
Also i stumbled accross a site that makes alloy arms for the 870/10 if your interested or havent already found it yourself!
Thanks again for info its greatly appreciated mate!

Re: '93 Works YZ10, welcome to the family
For my yellow wings, what I do is two coats of fluorescent yellow, followed by white, followed by two more coats of fluorescent yellow. this allows the yellow to stand out both on the front and back of the wing.
On my 870, the aluminum front arms that I have appear to be the standard front arm width (not sure who made them, but I think you can also get a set from pargu). There are two mounting holes for the c-hub carrier, for standard and "wide" front. I use the outer hole for a wider front. I also did a hex wheel conversion on the 870 (which I never made a video for...maybe I should). I got the info from one of the threads on here. It basically comes down to using Kyosho CVDs. This allows me to run hex rims on most of my vintage 4wd buggies (yz10, lazer zx, cat 2000) and my newer lazer zx5. The JC racing wheels I use on my '94 YZ10, as I have yet to figure out (or rather, put the effort into figuring out) a hex conversion for that.

Re: '93 Works YZ10, welcome to the family
Great thanks for the tips re painting fluoro! Will definately try your method and then a spraypak will last longer then 1 shell! Any good tips cleaning the shell up before painting or just a good clean with detergent and a light scuff with 1500-2000 wet n dry will do the trick?
A video on the kyosho conversion would be great too! I think i did read something on this sight somewhere about it? A video would be easier and yours are sooooo informative...
So what new yokes have you got now?

Re: '93 Works YZ10, welcome to the family
I just made a separate thread with links to my 870c videos, with a hex wheel conversion video recently added: http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=33915
As for the bodies, I just use dish detergent and warm water and let it air dry. I have a sponge that I use exclusively for body washing, to avoid getting any food goop residue over them.
"New" yokes that I recently purchased are a '91 works and two '94 YZ10s. Pictures below are most of the collection, excluding the '91 works (which requires a bit of work) and the NIB '94 YZ10. The 870 and the '94 on the opposite corner are my runners, while the rest are shelfies.

Watched the vids too and you race really clean lines....easy to see why your out front most of the time! For an old car they are still pretty good runners!
