New member, old RC10

Post by martinman »

Hi Everyone,

After an almost 25 year hiatus, i'm back into RC with my kids. My ca. 1984 RC10 is out of the moth balls and I'm trying to figure out what I need to run it. Here's the basics:

1. Original Edinger RC10
2. Airtronics XL-2P Radio (w/ melted battery pack... more on this later)
3. Assortment of wheels (knobbys and foam)
4. Assortment of motors
5. Old and (newer) 8 cell battery and charger.

I haven't looked at this stuff for sooo long. The smell of my old parts tacklebox really brings me back... I built this thing up with my father when I was just a wee lad -- good memories.

Anyway, so a few years ago I was given:
1. A new 8-cell battery
2. Rooster ESC (w/ reverse)
3. Magnium Jr. w/ 1 servo

I charged the newer battery up and it still holds somewhat of a charge. I put AA batteries in the XL2P battery sleeve and it seems to have melted the terminals on one end (!!!) .. It got all hot, so something over the years became mis-wired and essentially ruined it. Also, the usual battery acid decay -- I probably didnt' store it well 20 years ago!

I've been reading on the forum and there is quite a bit I can do with what I have. I'd like to keep everything stock -- even down to the brush motor. I'd like to swap out the radio parts to the ESC as I still have the original wiper in there! Suspension looks to be a bit leaky. However, there is still some 'bounce' in them (that is, there isn't any 'sag' or 'deflation' in the front or rear).

I think at the very least, i'll need a new battery and (maybe?) a new radio? The crystal set is different from the magnium jr to the XL2P. Not sure how the ESC plays into all this... Any help would be appreciated on which direction I should take this!

One problem that I recall when running it. When accelerating I hear the motor / transmission moving, but the car goes nowhere. Almost like the gears in the transmission aren't making contact or something. This only happened a few times as I recall. Usually, the car was pretty rock solid.

Thanks,
mm

Got some runtime out of it today -- only about 3-5min. Still works pretty good! I'll need a new battery and charger for sure. My reading suggests that the 15min 'set and forget' chargers are a no no. I was looking at a NiMH battery, but I'm not sure what capacity to get. I don't want to melt my electronics.

I don't want fast -- just as long as a runtime I can get. Any suggestions?

Also, I was going to pickup a used RC10 for my daughter. What do you guys recommend B2? B3? She is 8 and quite enamored with the whole thing :)

My daughter ran my b3 in the basement to learn how to drive r/c. Worked pretty good. They are pretty durable and handle pretty well. Still plenty of parts and easy to find NIP for them yet so that would get my vote. If she turned out to be a natural driver you could go gold pan...my daughter thought it was fun to run into things so she ran the b3
