i love vintage racing.. even if you had a scratch built giloppy car held together by epoxy and random balsa wood supports, you really did have a good chance to compete and win. and look at the variety of cars there, i mean i know they are mostly some of the same models/brands.. but now you goto a 2wd race, and you see b4's, xxx's, maybe a kyosho and possibly a tamiya... this is in the US of course. my track 98% of the people run b4's.

Funny you say that Mikedealer I always wanted to go to my club and race something old against all the current cars and see exactly how far I can get. Surely to some extent your driving capabilities would have to be extremely high before you have run your car to its full potiential and need a car that was more tunable.

This my Dog Fighter is the clone of Herbert Hanss's concours winner car. His car was the 1st. place of C-main in that race and was one of my most favorite modified Yokomo when I was boy. Herb used be a driver of CRP, and won lots of concourses in 1980s. I love his cars.

I used to love the CRP/Scorpions from those photos. Vince Ito was doing many of the cartoon drawings in the race ads and t-shirts back in the day. He was a mainstay in any concours event at any race he went to. It's too bad that concours isn't done more often anymore.

Man, dig all the tube socks in that first pic! LOL! YOu know where this hobby has gone horribly wrong... no one does concours like that anymore. That's when this was truely a hobby... now its just about toys and not modeling anymore.

You may be right Erich. The end of the golden age of R/C racing is directly paralleled with the demise of the Concours competition at larger races. Racing now is all about the newest CNC'd part, injected molded composite or one-race tire. Unfortunately, the fun of the hobby has all but been sucked from the life of R/C racing. Threads on various racing forums discuss how to bring back old racers and bring in new racers to the fold, yet everyone overlooks the simple factor of FUN.

At least we have all figured out that the old stuff still holds a lot of fun memories for us.

I love Vince Ito's illustration too. He had done also DJ of that IFMAR race. I think he is one of the special person of the 80's RC scene except for a-main drivers.
