Couple of questions regarding my WOIN project - Steering

Post by mdutcher »

I am concurrently working on another vintage WOIN project with a gold pan RC10. I have a couple of questions for the experts.

First, I have noticed that the steering rack is cracked where the ball studs go in. I would like to replace them. I have noticed that I could find vintage ones on eBay, but was wondering if there are some good aftermarket options. Are there?

Second, and more importantly, I tried installing some new titanium turnbuckles with some new ball cups. In looking at the original ball cups that I am replacing, I can see that the new ones are bigger. I tried to install the new ones and have found that when steering, the 2 sets of turnbuckles, camber and steering, are hitting each other at certain points. I could move the steering rack back to the back holes, but am not sure what that will do with the steering geometry. What are my options here for when I am trying to use modern RPM ball cups?

If you can help by explaining or showing pictures of what you were able to do, then that would be great.

Thanks!

you'll have to install the short ball studs on the cranks and the ones they are hitting. There is the same question in another thread with part numbers in it and links to the ones I mentioned. Do a little searching and you'll find it somewhere in the rc10 section here.

You can buy A&L bellcranks for the RC10 again which would also solve your clearance problem.

Google Team A&L.

if it's an "old is new" style car with a narrow front end, i don't see how they should be anywhere near one another. not like a stock buggy front end anyway. one of my cars is a tub chassis w/ an rps bellcrank, that alone sits way up off the chassis. even with rpm ball cups there is no rubbing.

seems like you need a new bellcrank anyway, but why don't you post a pic of what you have now?
