Plastic part colour

Hi All, new to this forum, but not new to RC or the RC10.

My parents bought my RC10 for me in about 1987, it was 2nd hand and I suspect it might be an "Edinger" version, although I'm not sure on that at the moment. I'm sure the original box had the end "inked" however I know that box was thrown away circa 25 years ago!! I have a kit box that it's in that I know came from someone else. The chassis also won't be original, as I remember breaking a chassis and having to buy a new one.

The car has been sat in my parents loft (attic!) for I guess 20+ years, and I'm planning on getting it down and starting a bit of a restore job over the next few days.


Am I correct in assuming that originally all the plastics were supplied in the white / natural colour? From memory I have a feeling that mine had quite a few black parts, as well as a few white, and even a couple of blue!! I'm fairly sure that my old 3 piece wheels are all blue.

I'm a bit unsure what to do, weather to buy parts in white to restore to "fully original" or maybe even die everything black and see how that looks. I don't plan to run the car, and probably won't ever sell it as it was my first RC car. I just want to restore it, because it was my first RC.

Dying was popular back in the day not only for color but to make the nylon less brittle. I love a nicely dyed car, it gives it personality. If you want white parts they don't come cheap. Black is the easy answer and the wheels will take black over the blue or just leave them. It's all preference but I'd remove the parts, wash them good with soap, and dye them all as black as they will go!

Yup, I think making everything black seems like the best option, I'll come on to this!!

I've been and dug the car out, and got a couple of surprises. I'm now more confident that it's an "Edinger", and the replacement box that I got is also! Although judging by the other thread, this is a later box, and i'm convinced the original box was one of the very first. The build manuals also have the Edinger address on them.

The main chassis is an "A" stamped chassis, as I knew that wasn't original. The front nose is the "lighter shade" that I've seen mentioned. That said, it's been heavily drilled for lightness (as had the original chassis - hence I broke it!!).

As luck would have it, most of the plastics are already black - all of the rear end (inc gearbox) and most of the front. The front arms are the only plastics left in white - but there is one worn black in the box, so I guess it was all black and I had to replace an arm.

Oddly it is missing steering blocks, and also most of the camber links / ball cups so I'll get myself on ebay and start looking for the parts that I need.

You will find ball cups in black no problem, they are still a current part. The steering arms you want to be careful, make sure you get the offset ones not the on-center. They look a lot alike. The difference is the kingpin will go beside the hole for your axle on yours, the on center have a kingpin that goes thru the axle hole. I can grab a part number if you want. If you replaced the axle too then it wouldn't matter as much.

Sounds like a fun project. One of mine has all the parts dyed red w a black tub. And one has all parts dyed black w a green tub. The Color deft gives it some character ..

Thanks for those steering part numbers. Oddly it's missing the axle as well as the block - which I guess means I took them off together at some point, no idea where / why!! Actually, I think I do remember, and I think it was something to do with a pan car that I made as a school project. No idea if I still have that anywhere as technically it never got finished!!

Yeah, should be fun. As I get older, I really start to wish I'd kept more of the cars that I've had in the past. I kept this as it was my first, but so many others got sold on as I needed to cash.

6219 should be the trailing style axles for the 6216 steering arms. I bet one of the eBay rc chop shops has them all ready to go for cheap if you don't mind used.

There isn't any reason you couldn't upgrade to the latest version which was an aluminum axle and different arms but it kinda ruins the look IMO

Yeah for sure, and parts I put on the car need to be "period"!! Although I may make an exception for ball cups / hardware!
