Project "Icadido"

Post by markbt73 »

Through various wheelings and dealings over the past year, I have found myself the, ahem, "proud" owner of two Cox Bandidos and two Kyosho Icaruses (Icari?). I've already built one clean Bandido runner:

And am left with... all this.

There are almost enough parts there to build two complete cars. I'm short one dogbone and one set of steering links, but I'm sure I can improvise something. Not shown is one battered but useable Icarus body/wing/rollcage. The plan is to build a nice clean Icarus for occasional running, and one cobbled-together, don't-care-what-happens-to-it basher out of the rest. I have a repro Ultrastock body on the way from TBG; not sure which car will get that yet. I guess it depends on how my paint job turns out...

...nobody?... Yeah, I wasn't all that into it either. Just one of those cars I wanted way back when.

Anyway, here it is, ready to go:

Basically just cleaned and refilled the shocks, cleaned up the leaked oil from the loose bleeder screws, threw bearings in the gearbox and lubed it (gears were completely dry), and screwed everything back together. Has the original Le Mans 360ST motor, old Futaba radio gear, and a Tamiya TEU101BK ESC.

Just charged up an old 1500 NiCd. Gonna take it out in the rain and see what it can do...

Well, I'm pleased to report that it runs great! Oversteer-y fun on wet pavement, and nice reverse-to-forward wheelies in the grass. (oh right, that's why I like these old entry-level cars; they're five pounds of fun in a four-pound package.)

The old Le Mans motor seems to be in decent shape, though it smells a bit like ozone after running for a few minutes.

Too cold and wet to stay out there for long, and I couldn't get a decent action shot with my phone. But that didn't stop me from trying:
