XX Versions

Looking to add a XX to a collection of circa '92 / '93 buggies and need to determine the easiest way to identify an early XX example in pictures (if shopping on ebay, CL, etc). There is a lot of great info in this forum regarding the differences between XX versions (standard, CR, and Kinwald).

Sounds like the earliest examples can be most easily identified by the existence of plastic outdrives / shafts, correct? I also understand there were slight differences in the rear suspension, but I'm guessing those would be difficult to identify in pictures.

Does anyone know when each version was introduced?

I'm also curious about your thoughts on the Hydradrive. Are they reliable, or do they fail and require attention? Why did Losi move away from the Hydradrive with later models?

easiest identifier of an early version non-CR XX buggy is "hoops" on the rear arms around the lower shock mounts. also look at the rear T plate, there should NOT be screws holding the arm mount to the plate, that is a CR thing. there may be other differences as well, but I cant think of them off hand.

The XX used velcro straps for the battery holder, while the Cr moved to abattery brace with a pin on the servo hold down. The rear hubs changed from the XX to the cr as well. Original XXs had the dish wheels with lexan covers, the CR went to the 5 spokes. CRs had the 8008 body i.e. no "shoulder pads", and when you got to the Kinwald, you got the xcellerator body. Seems like something out front changed too, but I cannot remember what... Caster blocks maybe? to the 25 degree ones?

XX Was first publicly seen in IFMAR worlds 1993 Basildon UK summer 1993. There was so "spy shots" from XX in RCCA magazine in September 1993 issue but it became to public sale very late 1993. Therefor I think You should rather try to find Team Losi JrxPro SE that was available 1992/1993.

I think hydra drive was abandoned because of (not in particular order):
- Motors and batteries become more powerfull and Hydra drive could not handle them anymore. Hydra drive become really hot during race if properly adjusted.
- Tracks become different. See tracks eg 1991 worlds track where Hydra drive was used about 1st time.
- (rear)Tires become better
- Slipper cluches become better and they were lighter than Hydra drive unit.

Hydra drive was a reliable if it was properly adjusted, but if it and slipper was set too loose You might have problems with it. I used them sometimes even in 4wd (Yokomo) but I had not never have problems with them.

Wanted to add additional detail to this string... Features inherited by the 'XX' were originally found on the Losi prototypes raced in the '91 Worlds. Those protos closely resembled the Pro SE, but they had adjustable front rake, Hydradrive, and the front bearings were carried in the spindles instead of the wheels. The '91 protos appear to have initially developed into the Pro SE, with the remaining features eventually becoming the production XX.

Having a XX in the shop for a rebuild at the moment, I can add a few changes I have noted.....
- Front shock tower
- Use of a Front Hinge Pin brace on the XX (that one threw me)

I'm sure I'll find more, but I've been working on this XX rebuild for a few years now, and I still haven't gotten very far. Oh, and when Associated tries to sell you a complete screw kit for a XX, don't believe them...... the kit has less than half the required screws (damn them!).
