My circa '92 2wd buggy collection

Hoping to finally get the 2wd buggies I salivated over as a young teenager after the '91 IFMAR Worlds, and am looking for some direction. Please share any words of advise or pitfalls I should try to avoid. I've never attempted to put together a collection of desired cars from my youth, but I've always browsed ebay for vintage cars for nestagic purposes. I'm not looking for NIB or trophy cars, as I'm hoping to eventually end up with nice examples that I can display, but don't feel bad about driving. I'm expecting some restoration may be required. Any direction would be appreciated... where should I focus my attention to find the desired models? what should I avoid? etc, etc


List of desired models include (in desired order):

AE RC10 team car (black pan)
This was my first legit buggy after graduating from a Tamiya Hornet and Kyosho Raider.

Traxxas TRX-1
Always salivated over this car, but chose the RC10 instead as it was 'the car to have' at the time. My LHS had Traxxas models displayed in the front case and I would always stare in desire at the TRX-1 as I walked by.

Tamiya Dyna Storm
I was so excited when Tamiya released this model, but was frustrated with the high sticker price. Tamiya racers have always been more expensive than comparable American models. But, the Dyna Storm was an exciting replacement for the underwhelming Astute & Super Astute.

Kyosho Triumph
I was never a big Kyosho fan after my poor experience with the Raider, but the Triumph always caught my attention with its double deck chassis and belt drive tranny. It was the only production car to have all of the trendy mods of the time: belt drive tranny, made popular by the A&L Leathal Weapon, double deck carbon chassis, adjustable front rake, "long suspension", etc.

Losi XX (edit: updated with JRX Pro SE instead of XX)
I've never been much of a Losi fan, but the adjustable front rake and hydra drive were a big deal at the time! I almost feel obligated to pick to one up!

Schumacher Cougar 2 Works (purple pan)
Not a 'must have' for my intended collection, but I loved staring at this model in the pages of RCCA. It's another one of those 'sexy' buggies available at the time, but wasn't readily available. I think Stormer was only place I ever saw them sold.

That's a nice collection to obtain, good cross section and worthwhile.

The rc10 and losi cars will be easiest to find, with all the others a bit tougher. You're best bet is to start scouring places like ebay and craigslist for often mislabeled or misspelled auctions and ads.

Otherwise, keep your saved searches on ebay, check them out daily, and you will be able to find all of those cars, and depending on your requirements(and checkbook), find ones that will be suitable for you.

I will say I think the dynastorm will be one of the more expensive ones to obtain, and obviously, the better condition, the better the price.

Keep digging up information on all of the cars on your list on this forum, and ask questions and add pics when you find those cars. Once you have enough posts, you'll be able to participate in the buy/sell/trade forums, and could possibly find other cars and parts you need.

you should get to know the XX, one of the best buggies ever made.

and you may need a mortgage for the dyna storm.

That's a fantastic list. I have three of the six and would love to add a TRX-1. In general, I would say to make sure you get the most complete car you can, especially for the non AE and Losi cars. Sometimes parts can be hard to find or REALLY expensive.

Kyosho Triumph is on the way! Should be here next week.

The Triumph is complete and appears to be in 'runner' condition. Also includes Tekin 411 ESC and Green Machine motor. Should be a good starting point for restoration. I'll start a new thread with details and pics in the next few weeks after it's arrived and I have time to dig into it.

6036 is a booger to find outside of the NE United States or Japan!

yeah, I might have to just look for the chassis and a normal tub team. I havent seen a minty 6036 in my travels yet.

I'll be keeping you in mind if/when I'm able to find a Cougar2.

RC10 Team Car is coming!!!

Hopefully it'll be here by the end of the week. Looks like was only run a few times and has the box, manual, tools, springs, etc. Body is also unpainted.

It'll probably stay boxed up until the Triumph is done. I'll start a new thread for it at some point...
