Which old skool esc?

I am currently working on getting a few old cars running and thought I would open up discussion on what old skool esc people prefer to use.

Is it a Tekin, Novak, Ko, JR ????

I plan to run 1700scrc black cells and either stock or light open motors. Any suggestions on make and model welcome.

I always used Tekin and Novak, with a preference for Tekin.

Thank you Jeff.

I have been buying up a handful of old esc's of late to add to my already growing collection. Tekin is a manufacturer that I have been searching out mostly for.

I have a 410K on it's way and a 411P plus have a MOSPOWER and a Gold Star unit too.

Have lots of Novak's too and was wondering which perform with the least amount of trouble/gremlins.

Novak T4 is a solid performer and was released in 1988. So its appropriate for any vintage runners 88 and on.

Novak all the way! Tekin is yuck! :P

The M5 Novak would be the most common for 1700 scrc days! IMO 8)

Jason,

You need to get yourself a Talking Electronics Xenon ESC. Available in both a 4-FET (540) configuration, or a 9-FET (medium Mod) config. Just about as 'back-in-the-day' as you can get..... link here: http://www.talkingelectronics.com/projects/Xenon/Xenon.html.

Go on mate, I dare you....

I used to be devoted to Novak so I really can’t give any other firsthand advice. My first esc was the NESC-1 and then the T1. Problems started off soon enough as 1987-88 were the years where the motors got a bit too hefty for the T1. Typically we used 15-17 turn in 4wd and 17-19 in 2wd matched with the 1200 scr. The T1 would handle the 19 turn in a 2wd with ease, but from my experience it got unstable and overworked on heavier loads. The T4 was great with all these motors, but then again in 1988-1990 in 4wd we were down in 13 turn with the 1700 sce.

In my opinion the the T4 was the choice in 1/12 up to the beginning of the nineties. If you're using cars matching the 1700scrc the T1 and T4 would be too much of old school, otherwise I think both would perform great with stock and mild modified motors. For 1700 scrc period I agree with slotcarrod and the M5, and of course the legendary 410-M1c.

At this point I have the following models on hand.

Tekin- MOSPOWER, 411P, 411G, 412P-'Speed Star' and 410K.

Novak- T1, T4, T1X and 610RV.

Ko Propo- RM7 Limmited II, CX-II and CX-III.

Futaba- MC112B and MC116.

Kitts- K80 MAGIC

From this line up which models do you guys prefer?

I've had a novak T1 for close to 20 years and till this day has never missed a beat. Can't say to much about the other models, but I have heard that the ko esc are prone to failing, so I would go with the novak t1.

it really depends on the motors you are running with them.

If you have some lower winds, I would say do the T1, T1x, or either of the 411's. Otherwise, just kind of select the esc based on the wind and specs of the esc.

of course, if you are trying to be period correct or 'tribute', you'd have to align your models to the years the esc became available or what the original carried.
