J.M's vintage C.A.T 4WD lot

This would have to be the longest running r/c project I have undertaken yet. Most people who know me will tell you that from the beginning of my involvement with the vintage off road buggy resurgence around 8 or 9 years ago, I am best known for my love of the old Schumacher buggies.

For me this journey has been a lot of fun and for the most part has kept me busy over the years tinkering in one way or another with these historic racers. For me Schumacher cars of the 80's and 90's have always been synonomous with quality and pedigree. Building this lot has been a real passion of mine for some time and it certainly feels good knowing I can see the light at the end of the tunnel with these builds coming to a close.

This did not happen over night and would not have been possible if not for many of my friends out there (especialy my good mate Alex) who have trusted in me and traded or sold me items I have needed along the way. To them I will say a very big thank you for your help, generousity and friendship.

C.A.T SWB (display car)
Built from scratch with many new parts, good condition used parts and even hand cut and finished fibreglass sheet items such as the chassis plates and shock tower. Built as faithful to the factory original item as I could manage with the exception of polished AE gold bottom loading shocks all round. A Mr Lexan repro bodyset and Bugle driver figure, wing and even alloy wing buttons  .
Obviously still in need of the SWB main belt (yet to find).

C.A.T XL (display car)
Built from scratch with many new and good condition used parts. Still yet to find some nicer shocks for the rear but formthe most part this one is as close to finished as I will get it.

C.A.T XLS (display car)
Again this car like the others was contructed as close to the original factory car with many nip parts and good condition used parts. Some of the fibreglass parts were also cut and hand finished from fibreglass sheet.

C.A.T XLS 'driver'
Built with the intention to drive on the race track come 'special' vintage days. The aim was to have an XLS as faithful to the original with the addition of some optional extra's that were around back in the day.
Black anodised alloy gearbox sideplates, a WASP slipper assembly and TRINITY ball diff with alloy hex outdrives make up the rear end. Aftermarket belts were used which continue drive to the front alloy trans case which again sports alloy hex outdrives and tungsten diff balls.
A black graphite saddle pack chassis and top plate were also used and ball raced alloy steering levers keep the slop out of the steering nicely.
A very solid alloy rear shock tower with built in wing mount was also used.
I'm still yet to decide on a power plant but I have a Ko Propo CX-III currently being repaired and I have a selection of brushed motors to try out.
Although I have plenty of 2.2" wheels that i could use for this car I seriously want to stick with the chrome plated original rims and the classic tall spikes.

The first of 3 Procat's I have been working on over the past few years,
Inspired by a car the famous Australian Colin Grenenger once drove at National level this Procat pretty much gave me the inspiration to look deeper at all the older Cats from the 80's and early 90's.
Built upon a Composite Craft chassis many new and only very few slightly used parts went into this build. You may notice the silver front alloy gearbox went in there. Still yet to complete with paint this car is almost done and will be saved from use and have a place amongst my shelf display collection

Colin Greneger's Procat. Left untouched since the early 90's.

My second Procat build was designed to be run on vintage race days but I wanted to try and keep the build to a standard Schumacher spec without going modern day part route. Has lots of old skool GPM alloy upgrades, alloy hex diffs, ceramic diff balls and the elusive ball raced alloy steering kit (one of two I own).
Still yet to fit brushed Tekin and Orion combo and come up with a fresh paint scheme.

The last of my Procats has been a long term rebuild and has a very special history to it. Purchased in a jumbo collection lot a few years back this Procat was a schumacher team car driven by well known Australian driver Andrew Nelson back in the day. From what I am told this car was raced in the 91 Detroit Worlds. Although it's not wearing the correct lexan body and undertray that he ran at that meet the chassis is. You might notice the 'belt over top' of the lower chassis plate (an early Bosscat concept) this car is pretty rare from my understanding. I even have the Schumacher factory paperwork that came with the mod kit
When I acquired this car it was filthy with many items rusted and perished. I opted to tear it down and rebuild after a good clean and replaced some parts that were too far gone. Retired from any track work this car will proudly be displayed as a shelf car from here on in. Still yet to add the rest of the electrics.

Gee thanks Alex, I'll take that as a compliment (I think) LOL.

If it hadn't of been for your help with Schuey parts over the years none of this would have been possible. You might even say all those old 'graveyard' bits and bobs went on to enjoy a good life in the making of many of my cars. Thanks again champion.

For sure I can follow in your track with the pros of the CATs. For me these cars maybe (no definitely) exceeded my heaviest crushes on girls in my early teens. Fantastic collection!!

VERY nice collection of felines. If there's one vintage RC car that I would like to build and hop up that isn't an Optima series, it would be a purple-pan CAT!

Yeah the Matt finish is actualy just an over spray film. It's obviously left there till paint is done.
