dirt oval discussion

Post by kaiser »

back in the day i "cut my teeth" racing dirt oval.

started with a jrx2 based edm, ended with wedge bodied cobbed together rc10/houge kit w/jg lowering kit.
we also had a bbt or ascot sprinter. i gotta get pics up of that so you guys can tell me what i have (my dad bought it used, guy said is was bbt)

anyway, i'm jonesing for dirt oval action. the track that the vonats is being held at has a nice oval track, so that got me thinking again.

i'd like to discuss oval conversions for the rc10, variations, setups, what some of you have found to be good or bad.
my last oval race was sometime in 1991, so it's been a while.

so far i've gather a few bits:

macallister lowering kit (not dead set on it, just bought one of a member a while back "just in case" lol)
a rc10ce to use as a base for a edm or latemodel/wedge
dad's old sprinter (found that bad boy on a shelf at rchr, the old vonats track) it needs a restore. mip gearbox on that one, also needs restore.

so what's the good word out there about dirt oval?

old is new edm?

I've got a JCar direct drive which was brilliant on ovals. Mine is for the JRX2. I thought the 5 link rear suspension was wonderful even for oval. The direct drive puts the motor off to the left so it helped out with weight distribution.

If Eddie (transamman) still has that Terminator 2.25 in the B/S/T avail (super cheap) jump on it, the r&d (later Kranzels) RC10 Terminator was and is still a super capable
(USOWC winning chassis at least 25 times).

A stock CE with a cut rear tower and .71's in the rear and a 0/0 or 0/1.5 rear toe setup and a Bomber shell or EDM is a blast, and while we ran Graphite cars BITD the tub car isn't bad 8)

I trued and grooved some foams for Bscotti a couple of years ago for his Customworks Dominator he wanted to bring, so I'm sure there are others that will follow suit!

Dirt oval is my primary form of racing, I run mod sprint, 13.5 sprint, nitro sprint, and 10.5 edm on a pretty regular basis. I fill the gaps with paved oval 17.5 pan car and 13.5 non wing sprint car.

here's an example of a WOIN style 2.25 terminator with some rare period parts that I built. It went to another member here on the board.

to be perfectly honest, with all of the "dirt oval hop-ups" there was back then, at the end of the day, almost nothing beat a well prepped, basically stock rc10 (at the tracks i raced). offset chassis' worked though.

i would agree, until custom works released the intimidators.

at least at my track (indoor, blue groove, banked oval) we couldn't compete against that car.

the terminator is just cool, and it's a good price.

i would like to find or make and offset chassis at some point for a rc10 based car.

I always ran a stock front CE tower and a cut down rear tower so I could run .71 shocks. From there it's just rubbing on setup. I have a good thread on here somewhere with lots of pics of my rc10 based edm's

Most of the parts on that care are from Kranzel's. You can still buy almost all the parts as well.

There used to be a unique old pan car from either Bolink or Parma that was basically the solid rear axle setup from typical pan cars but was split down the middle so that each half was now essentially a swing axle with the motor on the right side of it. It had 2 rear shocks. Weird setup. Barry Raborn ran a custom dirt oval car that used this rear end with an RC10 front end in a dirt oval Nats event. He was the only person in the A-main that was not running the Custom Works car. He led the A-main until about the last 30 seconds when his batteries fell off. He's still got most of that car. I need to get some pics of it.
