Vintage A Stamp RC10 A-arms breaking axles on original car

Everyone,
Here's a question for those of you that know the RC10 rear suspension well. I have a stock RC10 with the original rear a-arms, dogbones, and axles. Recently, I broke an axle and couldn't figure out what had happened. After further investigation, it seems that the original shocks are too long and the hole in the a-arms has worn. Now, when the shocks are fully extended, the axle gets caught up in the a-arm opening and breaks when the motor forces the dogbone to rotate. This has just started recently and I am guessing that it is due to wear. Here's the problem, I'm not quite sure what is worn and what to replace to fix this issue. I looked at a few newer cars and the shocks don't seem to extend as far as the original shocks on the RC10. Did I assemble the shocks incorrectly back in 1984? Not certain how to fix this, please help!
Thanks!!
Rich
