One of the guys in our church saw our track, thought my son could have fun with this-

Anyone know if this is runner capable, or will self destruct like the shock collars did-

That Ultima is more than capable, but every car has it's weak points. Those red shocks gotta go, they were crap--and the red collars would crack if you just looked at them too hard. With a set of Kyosho Golds and the "Turbo" taller shock towers, the suspension on that car can compete with that of the RC10.
EDIT: Actually, no, the car isn't capable. Send it to me.

Don't forget to brace that front bulkhead that was a weak spot . Back in the day all you had to do is punt one into the pipe and it useually split in 2 . But man I could sure use that body

Indeed--I don't have a lot of Ultima parts, but I have that bulkhead & a set of front arms in near-perfect condition.

Nah, Miles got it handed directly to him. He's going to have to build it and repair it.
Is the tranny weak?

Hardly, the gearbox is basically the same as what's in the Optima, but without a chain & sprocket. I think the original Ultima like you have there has the same OT-41 final pinion gear made of soft aluminum, but you'll have to check a manual and confirm that...if yes, you'll want to pick up a hard final pinion gear, I think transamman has some for sale. This is a steel or hard-anodized aluminum gear that won't wear out like the soft aluminum one will.
One thing you'll like is the gearbox is a helluva lot less futzin' around than what you're used to with an RC10.

is this going to be used as punishment for miles? if he misbehaves or doesn't do his chores, you make him drive this instead of his rc10?

This is a very rare car and seems to be in good condition - put it on the shelf and give Your son a Kyosho DB instead.
As farmer writes, the front shock tower will bend, I would mount one in carbon and replace the week alloy Final gear with a hardned one. '
Other shocks is a must.

use longer hinge pins in the front and add a little brace from the one arm to the other. That will help in running the bulkhead without breaking
