You should never pay as a gift for online transactions. You have no protection if the item isn't sent.

It could be an international thing? Maybe you can't send gifts to people in other countries?

Is it someone you've sent a gift to before?

a few things to think about...

1. it is against paypal rules (hat you agreed to when you signed up) to use gifting as payment for items. personally i couldnt ive a rats arse but paypal does and you may or may not as well.

2. as pointed out already, if you pay for an item as a gift your screwed if the deal goes south, you have no protection and the other person would be under no obligation to work with you.

3. this part is more personal preference but if the seller wants you to cover fees or pay as a gift so they dont have to pay paypal screw the cheap bastard!. i dont even deal with people who ask that. I, as a seller, dont even factor it in to my item cost, i dont even think about it. the fee is there and its such a marginal amount that if i lose however much than i do, who cares.

I had the same thing happen with a member from Germany as he could not find the gift option on his screen, as it was a repayment for me acting as the go between for him buying an item on eBay I felt perfectly right in asking for him to gift the money to me. I guess he did the best the screen allowed so I was shorted a little over $3 in Paypal fees for doing a favor. :x We'll probably settle up later when he contacts me.

I've been requested to pay as a gift many times by members here. I also do it when not asked to be nice. I have absolutely no problem with it as long as I'm paying a respected and established member.

agreed, on smaller forums with users that are regular posters i have no problem paying as a gift if they dont request one way or the other but sites like rctech and rcu no way in sam hill would i gift.

i have mixed feelings about being payed as a gift. on the one hand yeah i appreciate the thoughtfulness but its annoying when i go to print the label for shipping.

IMO, sellers should not ask to be paid via PP gift. It doesn't sound right - "pay me by gift so i don't lose money on fees and you're screwed if I decide to not send the item. :) It should be the buyers' option, if they trust the seller enough.

ireg, that's weird. On my account, "Gift" is exactly where "Shared expenses" is on your screen.

I never thought about the label issue until klavy69 mentioned it to me. Since I print the labels myself I'll have to let people know when I do deals not to send payment as a gift.

well what i do is just use usps online shipping services when they pay as gift but id actually rather go to the brick and mortar post office since their website blows chunks :?
