check out these Volkswagens I saw at the junkyard. The rows go all the way to the back.

I've owned a '64 (1200,) a '66 (1300,) a '70 (1600,) and a '71 super beetle (dual port 1600 with a whopping 70hp.) Commissioning that design was the only thing Hitler did right.

I would love to own a Bug. I drove one in Germany and it was such a different ride.

I want a bug too, but actually a bus more. My friend had a Bug, it was really cool to ride around in. He was about 5 years older than me so I couldnt drive yet. He had a broken fiberglass seat, every time I sat in it and he'd take off vigorously it would break a little more until the back was just a flap with a seat cover on it.... I'm gonna take this opportunity to ask if anyone knows about a Weber DCOE carb in a draw thru turbo application.

That's awesome. I am a big VW gear head but all water cooled stuff. I've always wanted an air cooled bug as my parents owned two. Someday!

I started out my working career as an apprentice mechanic in an old VW workshop. I already owned a 1967 beetle at that point and loved the Californian styled cars that were popular back then. For a while there I was knee deep in anything Volkswagen and have owned a handful of beetles, a split screen Combi then much later on got a T4 Transporter with the 5 cylinder motor but now own a T5 Turbo Deisel van for my work and everyday drive.
The early cars are a world apart from what most people drive and it takes a certain kind of person to appreciate their true appeal. Ive built a handful of the flat four motors for my own vehicles and again they are a very unique design compared to conventional water cooled motors.
They can be a lot of fun but also cost a pretty penny when things go wrong (and often do). Why any father would buy an old Beetle for his daughter is a mystery to me. They always seem to be breaking down here in Australia as the air cooled engines in summer dont hold up to the heat and abuse they have to deal with.

i live and breathe vw's. been into them since i was a toddler.

the only one i currently own is a 74 std beetle with a 1915cc (blueprinted/balanced the works).
the car is currently apart in my garage after an engine fire a couple of years back, it should be back on the road in 2012.

sold my 79 bus a couple of years back
sold my 400hp new beetle 1.8t big turbo last spring. (loved that car but had no time to race it anymore, rc is my racing now)

94 jetta
2001 passatt 1.8t
2004 jetta wagon 1.8t
2004 golf 2.0 (just traded in on a honda element as my family is too big for the little golf)
2006 passat 2.0t (company car, daily driver)

i'm the parts manager at a large vw/audi/porsche dealer.

my stable from a few years back, the two beetles and the bus:

74 std beetle with a 1915cc (blueprinted/balanced the works).

Back when I was into the performance stuff I built up an 1835 with a blue printed and counterbalanced crank. It had straight cut cam gears, ported and polished heads, twin Webbers, performance cam and a tonne of other goodies. That thing used to really go well.

I am also a big VW fan, and have only ever owned VW's...here's my current ride, had it for nearly 12 years now - a 1993 Corrado VR6 (2.9 litre, which is alot by european standards) I believe they were called the SLC (Sports Luxury Coupe) in the USA.

Its been fitted with adjustable coilovers, BBS RC wheels, exhaust etc etc, although I havent done much to it of late, heck I cant even find the time to do RC stuff!!
I beleive DerbyDan also has a VW as another hobby...I am sure he'll see this thread....

Been a big dub-head too - I've only actually owned 2 Volkswagens in my time - a T3 Multivan (1.6 mega-slow turbo diesel) & my VW Derby that I still own (& my usernames-sake)

I live very close to a drag raceway which holds a number of big VW festivals and with some friends that own a VW specialist garage - the influence is strong.

Reading through JM's post - I think that the un-reliabilty of these old VWs is alot down to the poor quality of the pattern parts that you are forced into buying just to keep them running.... that and the fact that like any old car a certain amount of constant 'tinkering' & maintenace is required to keep them running sweetly - skills that are gradually being lost these days

Some of the quickest road legal cars I've ever seen go down the 1/4 mile have been Beetles - the combination of the rear mounted engine & relative light weight means that not too much power is required to achieve a quick time.

Talking of quick Beetles - this one is rather serreal watching it do a burn-out in complete silence!

Sad to see all those bugs in the scrapyard - I bet some of those are in better shape than those on our roads in the UK!

Until just a few years ago, they were still producing the old style beetle in Mexico. Couldn't bring them here because they don't pass crash standards, hence the rere version that is here now. Still a butt ugly thing.
