Think Outside the Boxart, Old is Newdillac, Worldinger Build

Time to build a runner last year, I got really busy with work to the extent I could only work on it a little bit at a time in the evenings. I just couldn't get myself interested in a box art imitation, or dynotech'd up 10t nosed buggy as nice as some I've seen on this board. But I've gotten so much enjoyment out of tinkering with my RC10 again that I had to build myself something. This idea hatched over a year ago, after looking at some of the Detroit/Worlds type cars photos, and still not embracing the B2to4 era. With a drill press, hack saw, set of files....here's to trying to get a pale orange, pink and baby blue thing to clear a triple.

I'll spare a lot of the gory details and try to tell the story to where the car's at now. Started with an A Stamp in need of a second life. Just abut 3/16 off the sides, a stealth drilling, and a worlds treatment to the rear, a serious carving to a nose plate, and a handful of 10T bits, modified...



The front end came together first, starting with some tinkering around, B4 front shocks (couldn't resist re-anodizing some some Trinity collars), I had some brainstorms and got it all to fit



Then the rear end was next. Many of the photos of how this came together have been "misplaced", but I wanted to go a step beyond the RPM Worlds rear end, so with some custom fabrication (and no, I don't have CVDs that fit yet - only brass tubing and JB Weld)...



Finally, this is where it sits. Still probably a fair bit away from drivable (really short 270mm wheelbase for example ), but fun to look at I think...



I'll get one of your old-is-new type parts lists together at some point. Not yet though, as this buggy is still in the prototype stages, and further changes are necessary.

I like it. It is similar to a build I've been thinking on for a while now. I've been collecting a few bits here and there just to get it started. Good looking build so far.

Believe he stated they were reanodized Trinity shock collars.

It's been a while already, but I know they were purple Kinwald, intended for one of the Losis according to the header. I will find it when I list the parts.

Yeah I've been logging some serious work hours the past year, but still have time to monkey around on the workbench to blow off steam in the evenings.

Great build! Was the modification to the bell cranks needed for clearance? I know there's never a lot of room up there for experimentation, especially with the narrow front bulkhead designs.

Yep aeiou, I just took some Houges I had and filed them down to a uniform thickness across the front (there is a Ruffy thread somewhere that points out the the older/thicker design). That along with the white AE ball cups on the links clears the RPM mounts with ease. Note these are relocated holes I drilled in the 10T tower to keep camber kosher in compression. I was experimenting with different linkages and the bump steer is negligible with the AE ball studs, no washers or anything with 30deg blocks.

Don't have a measurement, but the B4's end up reaching the outdrive but barely touching/not really penetrating it. So I need em to be at least 1/2, probably more like 2/3 or 3/4 of an outdrive's interior length longer than the B4. I have an old 10T bone to chop and confirm what the exact length should be.

This is a very nice build. I don't have much to add and I try to avoid posts like:

"Cool Man! " or
"Nice ride dude! " or
"Way to go chief! " but...

since I feel like I need to acknowledge this build, all of the above!

On a side note, at first glance the way the exposure is on those first front tower photos I thought they were cut from a gold tub. Just an idea if anyone has a plethora of gold tubs.

Got a new part this weekend. A handmade battery hold down of my own design. I positioned the cup forward to let me slide the battery front to back a little over a cm, with some 1/4" foam to provide a 3-position spacer. The beveled "prongs" of the frp fit firmly all the way back into the bulkhead for stiffness.



And then I also re-fabbed the front end to the longer wheelbase holes in another nose plate. I actually bent the kickup down to about 27 degrees for the f#%& of it too. The steering is using the standard saver position, the bump steer isn't too bad, but the old setup was perfect. I will have to tune it out with some adjustments somewhere. The wheelbase is now 28cm, and I have to think this is more drivable. I continue to add tunability, because who has the foggiest what this will feel like.
