onepiece pod for RC12L

Post by V12 »

Found this onepiece pod in a lot I bought some days ago. The pod is for the RC12L.
I know there was a cheap casting version from GPM and a machined version from the German guy Oberle. Don´t know if there were more versions made than these two. Someone knows about this?

As you can see from the pictures it´s machined so it´s a good chance it´s one of those very expensive and very rare Oberle pods but as I have not had one of these in the past I don´t know. I just know Oberle made some onepiece pods for the RC12L and the Schumacher C-Car in very small numbers. Also I remember I did read about those pods used by German and UK drivers at a large race like Euros or Worlds. If American drivers or someone other had those also I´m not sure.

in fact GPM also do the OEM for some US companies , and the quality is good. Their Aluminum 7075 pod were used by the AE team drivers.

Did some search and found two different GPM onepiece pods but both look different to this one.

I had a lot of GPM parts in the past and some did look a little cheap and some did look very good. But I don´t think they were using 7075 at any part as these parts did wear pretty fast.

That IS sweeet 8) I'm jealous  I think you're correct, I've seen the GPM and it does look different than this.

Keep in mind that GPM changes their designs now and then (unfortunately their quality also tends to change whenver they change their designs). So it still could be GPM.

Got confirmation meanwhile from someone this is 99.9% an original Oberle pod.
I have had and seen a lot of GPM parts (did know the GPM distributor here) and this pod looks completely different regarding quality and production. And yes I have seen some different GPM onepiece pod in the meantime so they really seem changing the design now and then.
But if you look close to the pictures and compare to what you have seen usually from GPM and some other brands then you will notice this design is too detailed and costly so it must be something different. Actually the question just was is it an Oberle pod or was there another one making pods like this.

Nice pod, looks like an Oberle to me. Some of the USA AE team drivers used them for a while. They were a bit heavy but nicely machined. Super expensive back then so they were rare. I think I still have one somewhere.

And just got an Oberle clamping wheel hub from a friend last weekend. We were sorting out his old stuff as he has to move his shop to an other location and then found this hub between the old boxes.
I think will be from R12L also. Have to make pictures later today.

Finally some pictures from the Oberle clamping wheel hub. Don´t know exactly when these were released but in some small numbers also for sure.
Again it is a little more heavy than other left wheel hubs but I think this is for all of the Oberle parts just because of going with a different and very strong sort of aluminium.
Maybe Kent knows a little more on this one also.

I don't think I ever had one of the Oberle hubs. My 82 Worlds car used a Delrin hub with ligtening holes. The durability of the Delrin wasn't great, so after that we started milling and drilling the stock hubs. I have some ridiculously milled out hubs that look stock from the outside. And then at some point we started using magnesium hubs :)

If you still have any of those special hubs I think some guys would like seeing them, including me.

Here's a lightened hub I had in my parts organizer. It looks fairly stock from the outside, the only way to tell it's been lightened is to look through the wheel spokes. The blue color is from a batch of aluminum parts that I had anodized. I ran an aluminun set screw to hold the axle on to help keep the rotational weight balanced.
